Tale of a ruined strap

Post by hobbit712 » Sun Apr 24, 2011 4:19 pm

A few weeks ago I wore my newish Hamilton Khaki BelowZero while it was rather hot outside. Ended up sweating on it quite a bit. I saw that the strap was stained from the sweat. I removed the strap and tried to clean it with one of the leather cleaners I have around. I guess I got a little too agreesive with one side. I ended up taking a bit of the finish off. :cussing:

Well since it was already damaged I decided to take the rest of the finish off and try to re-do the color in black. Not wanting to get too much more aggressive at this point I used some lemon juice and water and removed more of the finish/coloring. I let it dry and then used some black leather dye. I let that dry and then used some liquid shoe polish to finish it off. I let it dry again and then gave it a bit of a shine. I cleaned out the rivet the best I could and replaced it back on the watch.

I am pretty pleased with the results. I may have to find an original leather strap to have that color option again though. Pics of before and after.

Good job, it looks good. Let's see what it looks like after another sweat test though.

Just curious, what would it of looked liked if you only washed it the first time around?

Does look damn good Steve. Its a cool strap to with the "lug nut" deals on it. Real solid.

I like it better in black. Nice job salvaging that one.

Wow. That looks great. I've always been a little curious about shoe polish. Won't it come off on your arm now?

How has the strap held up in the past 6 weeks?

I have only worn the watch a few times in the past six weeks. But the finish is holding up well! So far so good.
