Aegir company introduction

Hello all,

I have been around here a while now .
Some of you have already heard of Aegir, and some have not, especially with new members regularly signing up. So I will take this opportunity to introduce Aegir watches here and at the same time make the pricing and full specification known.

I will be releasing only one model in the beginning, as the costs involved making them the way I am, to release two, were very prohibitive. The second model will be released mid to late-2011.

Aegir watches concept was properly started in 2007, while sitting in the dive bell waiting for the divers to return. I was looking over my own watch in the bell finding the plus points with it and the negative points with it, in regards to diving.
I should point out, that both models were designed as commercial divers watch, taking in to consideration that most of them are not enthusiasts or collectors, nor have the need to track dive time and It was for this reason the design points are as they are. The CD-1 was designed with this in mind, as a “One watch” that could be used under a business suit or over a dive suit.
The design Idea I had, the name and model were not coming though and then I had a horrific diving accident, June 21st 2008, so things went on hold and I took well over a year out and here we are. The extra time has given me the chance to refine my design, come up with a name and model as well. Aegir Watches is the company, and Ægir is the brand. Pronounced (E) (gear) in the Scandinavian languages and (A) (gar) in English. Ægir was a Norse God of the sea.

The Concept Diver Two (CD-2) and the Concept Diver One (CD-1) were still only in my head and on some average pdf drawings. I worked closely with the designer Fidel Chirtes through the later part of 2009 and quite a bit of 2010. He turned the concept into a design with fresh ideas which are the current renderings that can be seen now on my website and are currently in production.
Prototype is expected by the end of Feb.

I tried to work with several companies along the way to make my cases. I had a strategy, a goal and a business model, that all parts would be not only coming from Switzerland and Germany, but is 100% made there as well. My being new to this industry, coupled with my normal impatience to have something done, made it difficult and had several false starts. I could not understand the time frames and rashly moved on to someone else to do the work.
It cost me a lot of time, but I learnt a lot! And now have slowed down a little, as I have no choice but to accept the delays and super long lead times that are the watch making industry. Still don’t understand them though.
Still, I have managed to have the watch being produced the way I wanted. The only thing that remains is the straps for the standard watches, which have not yet been decided.
The cases are currently being made for me in a small run of fifty watches using wire erosion not stamping, by Fricker in Germany. I have handled several Fricker cases, and they were very nice, so am happy to be working with them on this first production. Every other component in the watch is coming from Switzerland or Germany as well, so while I took the long road, it is still the right road for me.

The CD-2 is the first model being released and the expected date is somewhere around April /May 2011.
It will consist of 35 watches and 15 limited edition watches.
Full specs can be found http://www.aegirinstruments.com/detail.aspx?pid=6
Price, 1600 Euro, inclusive of EU taxes. Non EU buyers minus VAT at checkout, and will be responsible for any duties in their own country.

Limited CD-2 will be 50 pieces only, 15 from first production and the expected date is also somewhere around April/May 2011.
Full specs can be found http://www.aegirinstruments.com/detail.aspx?pid=33
Price will be 3200 Euro, inclusive of EU tax, minus VAT at checkout for non EU buyers, who will be responsible for any duties in their own country.
After first 15, price will increase to 3500 Euro.
There is more to this watch though and these details will be released in near future.

Regards and a Happy New Year to all.

Very nice Todd. I like the dimensions, very reasonable in today's mega diver market. Best wishes, and looking forward to seeing some real world pics.

Good luck Todd. I know I've said this before, but the website is truly excellent. When is the deck knife going to be available, and will there be one for recreational divers?

Cheers buddy

Yep, might help.

So deck knife, thats still being worked on, leather sheath is being made now but its expected soon and i will then look at lead times for others to see if its going to work out.
Working on a dive knife, limited to only a few once the deck knife arrives.
My vision is Ti with Kevlar handle with a fully serrated edge. But will see where we get together if Stuart Mitchell is interested.

Yup, this one is shaping up to be pretty special. Doesn't your new Damasko use a similar escapement?

Adam

I'm not 100% sure as the MHVJ website is not in english yet, but, the info regarding the movement they intend to use in the limited CD-2 seems :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

That PDF has some impressive info. They use a diamond-on-silicon treatment from a "trusted partner." Wonder if it's Cartier?

Also, they use six sigma and lean manufacturing methods. :fro:

I am only getting the Silicone oxide escapement. Strutec (R)
With best balance and Nivarox spring. Not bad

Keeping the decoration simple i asked for grit blasted main plate and bridges with StruTec decorated rotor.

had to adapt the case for this movement, as it has a different fixing point, and is 0.25mm lower, so had to make special dials for this one, keeping the movement in place to use the same winding stem position. Needs an adapter they are making then to utilize the same hands.

the CD-2 is nice. Good size all around. I like the dial, date, hands, pretty much everything. I will keep looking for a prototype. Too bad it's such a pita to get a project like this to completion. Jim, good to see you here. Congrats on the new arrival.
