MHVJ cal 2005
So can someone give me the lowdown on this movement? I know nothing about it and can't find much reference to it online (other than AEgir threads on the various watch sites).
I'm curious as to what sets this movement apart from ETA or Soprod (besides the fact that the decoration is pretty unique).
Thx.

Alright, Todd - Adam is out as Aegir spokesman. Why don't you give us the thought process behind the choice. I really am considering adding myself to one of the two CD-2 lists.

OK, so Mhvj is hard to track down some info, I know.
Dubois Technique Horlogère was acquired by Miguel Rodriguez in 2004, and they were making modules and escapements.
It was re-named at some point to MHVJ.
They make the escapements for Soprod, which he just so happens to own also.
He is actually the Festina Group.
They own Perrelet, L.Leroy, in the haute horlogerie segment.
L.Leroy I believe are using the Mhvj Tourbillon movement at the moment, and not sure what the Perrelrt has in it, but I would imagine a Soprod, as the Mhvj cal 2005, is a new movement, and I am one of the very first orders.
The cal 2005 was entered into the Concours International de Chronometrie, and no, they did not win.
There is only info on the winner, not the rest, which believe it or not was a Tissot.
They entered their Tourbillon as well, but Gerubel Forsy won that one.
So the cal 2005 is a chronometer only movement, and has 3 different escapements.
The Strutec diamond coated silicone escapement, which I am told Ulysse Nardin have the rights to it, until some point in 2012.
The strutec escapement, silicone without the diamond coat, which is on order for Aegir.
and the standard escapement.

The reasons I chose this movement, or it chose me, is I needed something different for the Thomas Prescher assembled and regulated watches, and it came down to Mhvj or Vaucher. Both of which look great, and both of which happen to be the same diameter as the Soprod A10.
I had to buy 300 min of the Vaucher, which Aegir could not afford to do, and Mhvj would let me make a small order, so I went with them. They have had some delays, that is for sure, but it is a brand new movement, so I should of planned for that perhaps.
I also wanted to build a relationship with them, as they have a Tourbillon, and yes, I will when I can, buy some.
In some ways, it is an unknown, but I know it will be the right choice.
The Soprod A10 is brilliant, so going on that the escapement in that is not to the same spec, I am already happy with just that.
I am hearing from them in Dec, if they can deliver in March, which I think they will.
If so, I will order another 10 movements, so I can make 25 watches in total, as that is where the list and wait list is currently at, and a few more sending me mails of interest.
I will most likely only make the 25, not the 50, and then focus on the CD-1, and if Thomas Prescher is willing come the time, the CD-1 LE.

Every step of the way, Todd has been unbelievably generous in sharing the who, where, what, and why regarding Aegir's germination.
Congrats with everything thus far.

I think the decoration is really unique. You should have a sapphire caseback made for these watches, Todd.

The movements do look really nice and should be seen.
But as a tool diver, i'm on the fence about display back.

I would think so, but it is a question I asked with no reply and will ask again, as the watch is over engineered anyway.patstarrx wrote:Display back is a pipe dream not an option.
But very unlikely.

I don't think it would take anything away from the "tool-watch" basis, especially if only used on the LE version.

Just out of curiosity Todd, why the desire to release a tourbillon
