So...lets talk PAM movements...

Post by SCM64 » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:14 pm

OK, so I really don't pay attention to PAM's much (see Rolex), except for those cool Sub one's whatever they are. You know with the bumps on the bezel every 15 minutes, and the little cutouts for the first 15 minutes. Those are cool. :excited:

But Chris mentioned that the movement in his 112 is a Unitas. I think I knew that. But my question is, do they do any mods other than some decoration? And what about the PAM Autos....are those inhouse, or are those tricked out ETA somethings?

I doubt there is a PAM in my future, but I know I have seen some very cool pics of PAM auto movements and am just looking to learn more about them.

And why the rabid following? I know that could be asked about many brands, but just wondering if there is something specific that draws such passion from so many fans.

My name is Steven, and I'm a PAM noob. :geek:

Steven,

Just started to try and learn about PAMs as well...

This web site has a lot of info....

Check out the in-house movements tab
and then click on the movement...

Thanks Mike. I'll have to check it out via laptop, since the iPad doesn't do Flash. :raised:

I read a review in one of the watch magazines (don't recall which model).

An interesting point in the introduction read something like...

"A very nice watch if it is not important to you reading the time to the nearest minute".

The spirit and force of Panerai can never be captured by words. Go try one on. Take it to a dark corner. :shh: Buy it; take it behind the school house. Have your way with it.

But to answer your question, OP has something for everyone. From Panerised Unitas to true in-house movements. Try paneristi.com if you really want to learn of this dark cult (e.g. http://www.paneristi.com/reference/vend ... index.html).

I am still a Panerai newb myself. But they have a bit of everything from what I see.

They took it to another level a few years ago with their in house movements that are pretty cool. Many of their outsourced movements (if not all?) are modified to gain COSC certification. My 24 has a modified 7750 which allows the second hand to be at the famed 9o'clock position. COSC certification but no minute ticks and I have not checked the accuracy yet. I stare at it too often to figure that out

We will have to wait for Luke and Adam to weigh in. Panerai and movements experts in their own rights.

Barry

The way I understood it was that they used top grade ETA movements with maybe some basic mods and regulation. The their higher end watches had in-house movt. but maybe I am wrong!

Steven, Panerai does use the regular Unitas 6497 movements, some are higher in decoration, others plain jane. I was sad to see that some of the 6497's that had pearlage done to the plates, only had the pearlage (or engine turning) done on the plates that showed, and the plates underneath only had it on the areas visible. (such as under the balance)

the movements are bumped up to 21,000 BPH, which makes for a smoother sweep, not that its noticeable on a sub seconds or no seconds watch

notice how the engine turning suddenly stops? its because the non decorated part is not seen when you take off the caseback, kinda half-assed if you ask me, for any watch.

heres a great comparo to many of the 6497 and Rolex movements in the older panerai watches. Here is a fantastic pic

Panerai also uses the ETA 7750 chrono in both chronograph watches, and the same 7750 movement (chrono parts taken out) in non chrono watches (many of their dive bezel sub watches use it)

not trying to knock the brand, but just stating the movements, they also have the new in-house stuff, which is pretty snazzy

Why haven't our Panerai experts weighed in here? :tap:

I would like to know more about what Panerai does to the 6497s.

Panerai decorates the 6497-2 with a swan neck regulator and decorated bridges.

I don't think they can do anything more than that other than develop an in-house movement, which they have.

This is a terrible pic of my 176 that I took many moons ago.

I must have gotten stupid lucky with the power reserve on my 112 then. Coming in at around 60 hours, I just always assumed that OP had punched up the movement in this area. Isn't the usual power reserve of a Unitas around 48hrs???

I just looked on the OP website, where the official spec on the OP X is given as "56 hours".
