Not Panerai but might be of some interest

ok guys so I'm sure this isn't everyone's cup of tea but I wanted to share the experience. I wanted to try a full size Panerai, but wasn't thrilled with the direction the company has gone. I came across this company http://vintagewatchparts.co.uk/ and am glad I did. They built me a wonderful homage to a vintage Panerai I've had it about a year now and I love it. The crystal is plexi, the movement is a vintage Hamilton 917 pocket watch movement, the finishing is beautiful very well done. The gentleman that owns the place is very good communicating a really great experience. Enjoy some pics (sorry my pics suck) some of them are from the assembly process:

it's very good, he starts with good components then does most of the final finishing himself

I would just wait another three years, until a real PAM costs a grand.

LOL true enough, but I love these old Hamilton 917 movements I have a Pilots watch with one as well, they're just beautiful.

I've become less pessimistic about good watches holding their value lately. Clearly the shitty models (of which there are many) will continue to tank, but something like a base PAM? I think it might hold value.

I look at the pre-ceramic Rolex market and things are so GD expensive ($10,000 for a nice complete LV Sub). At some point, people are going to start looking into the back catalog of other brands (vintage Speedmasters and Tudors have already jumped due to this) to get their "cooler than a current production" watch fix. It just seems inconceivable that an IWC 3227/3713/3536 will become $2,000 watches while a nice 14060M Sub sells for $7,500+.

Maybe I'm wrong and most people in this hobby really are stupid and brand obsessed, but I hope not. I suspect that when "trusted dealers" can no longer get Rolex on the cheap that they will start pumping Omegas, IWCs, Panerais, etc.

I had a Panerai previously the titanium 305, and truthfully it left me kind of cold, I didn't have it long. I think this homage scratches my itch has that classic Pam look, a killer movement (not a PAM historian but didn't Panerai do this as well fit other movements into their watches early on?). No it's not a Panerai but I'm ok with that.

I have a bit of a PAM itch right now. I'd love a 000 but my baby wrist makes that an impossibility.

They did, Rolex, Angelus, etc. They used JLC movements in a handful of models not that many years ago too.

How about a 512? 42mm 1940 Radiomir case. My wife has a puny wrist and she wears one regularly.

One of my close friends had 112 (like 000 with sandwich dial) on his 6.5" wrist and it looked great I thought.

The 112 is another great one that sadly has been discontinued.

so what does a nice condition Pam 000 go for with boxes and papers these days?

and does it use a Unitas movement?
6497?

They typically go for just under $4K. And yes on the Unitas movement.

42mm PAM 392 wears great on a smaller wrist

That actually seems fairly reasonable.
