Stallone is angry at Panerai

"Sylvester Stallone is unhappy with the Panerai watch company for copying the Slytech watch he commissioned 20 years ago — without his participation, or remuneration.

“It’s ticking Sly off, he’s not getting a cut,” said one insider. Maybe he won’t wear a Panerai to the Oscars, where he is expected to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Creed.”

Stallone is credited with turning Panerai into a cash cow when he wore one of their stainless steel diving watches (designed for the Italian navy) in his 1996 movie “Daylight.”

“Later, Stallone asked the company to produce a limited edition of 200 watches (dubbed the ‘Slytech’) with his signature engraved on the back,” the LA Times reported. “According to some versions of the story, Stallone handed out these watches to members of his cast and crew.”

Stallone told me through a spokesperson, “I am surprised that Panerai will be issuing a new edition of the Slytech watch without so much as consulting me or obtaining my consent.”

He added, “I am very disappointed in the company’s behavior particularly since it is well known that I helped establish their name and their brand.”

A spokeswoman for Panerai said the special edition of 500 coming out in May isn’t a Slytech. “It’s inspired by the Slytech, but it doesn’t say Slytech on it.” This one is called the Daylight.

The original Slytech watches reportedly sell for $400,000 a piece. Panerai did a 2005 limited-edition version of the Slytech (just 500 pieces) that is worth around $20,000."

5 years ago, this would have been big news. Now it just seems a bit pathetic, on the part of both Stallone and OP.

Pretty telling that so many of the Paneristi are fleeing now that Panerai is on the cusp of Hublot.

Can't see selling mine, but can't see adding anything current either...

I'm still a Panerai fan and love my 190 and 372, but there are only one or two pieces in the current collection that I would consider picking up.

I think they could eliminate 80% of their current lineup and nobody would care/notice.

I am on my third Panerai and really do like what I am (hopefully), sticking with now (250 Daylight). Apart from the 312, not much has come out from Panerai in the last few years that I have any interest in wearing in my wrist ... let alone paying the inflated prices they seem to try to flog them for these days.

Seems stupid all around and something a simple phone call-email-fax-text-etc would have prevented.

-hey Panarai-give Sly a freaking heads up. Hey Sly-you don't own Panarai. Hey Sly and Panarai-you both make out when you work together.

Unless this is some elaborate plan for them to make-up and issue a Slytech "reunion" limited edition of 500pcs

They're both riding the movie gravy train.

Saw Sly at an AP boutique opening in beverly hills last month, he seemed really into the pieces they had on display, maybe he'll be rocking an AP to the academy awards.

Funny, I hear that Sly couldn't get OP to give him a PAM 360. Lame, considering he almost single-handedly made modern Panerai viable.

Well wasn't the original deal struck prior to Panerai selling to the Vendome group? The new ownership don't really need to inform him of anything I would suspect.
