Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
Well, with the fiasco of the tongue-in-cheek Panerai rant post hopefully behind me, I want to ask if the learned enthusiasts can help a brother out? The PAM lineup and nomenclature is often confusing and daunting for a noob. I saw marchone's similar post and will be looking at those resources too. For now, I think I want the following:
44mm or so
Luminor case
Sandwich dial preferred
Running seconds
Date good but not a must
In house not a must
Any ideas for a starting point with these parameters in mind? Thanks.

PAM 000 is the base model with painted (sausage) dial
PAM 005 has sub seconds with painted (sausage) dial
PAM 111 has sub seconds with the sandwich dial
PAM 112 has no seconds with sandwich dial

I have a base 000 and had a 112, both very cool... but if you want the date and an in-house mov't you could jump up to a 312 (still 44MM)....

Sounds like a 111 would be perfect for you. Love mine, but I'm listing for a 000.

Start out with a used base.
Should you decide it's not for you, you can probably flip without much of a loss.

The 372 is my favorite too. I really like and prefer the shape of the hands of the 372 rather then the other ones.patstarrx wrote:372

111 or 312 will suit you well.
Re: Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
005 or 111 get my vote
Re: Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
or maybe the in-house 8 day movement-510 ( based off 111)
Re: Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
Yes! There you go, since you're starting anew, 510 is the one to get.jimyritz wrote:or maybe the in-house 8 day movement-510 ( based off 111)

How do we feel about the Subs? I always felt underwhelmed when looking at pics but I tried one at a local AD and thought it was pretty good in the metal. I am not sure how I'd feel about a Sub being such a departure, aesthetically, from the original design ethic. What do you guys think?

I like Subs as well and own one.
But I wouldn't start out with a sub or a have a sub as my only Panerai. It's not very representative of the brand. But maybe it's a good thing for some? Just IMHO.
Although 24 and 25 are dreamy since you chose to stick with a Luminor case.

Is the lume on the Sub models comparable to that on the more conventional models?
Re: Can you point me towards a particular Panerai?
I can't see why it would be any different, it is the same lume material. My 000 is a torch when coming inside from sunlight. Older Subs with trit dials will hardly glow at all, so if you want lume you need a K series or newer.mattjmcd wrote:Is the lume on the Sub models comparable to that on the more conventional models?
