Panerai 101
Panerai 101
What are the desirable models? What should be avoided? Any comments about PAM 292 and PAM 512? I like that they are both hand winders and their respective case sizes aren't too big for my taste.
Any reading I can be pointed to would be appreciated. I've only begun to look at PAMs. Thanks.

Re: Panerai 101
I like their divers the best. I think so many models, even though different look too similar. The Subs stand out to me.
DEATH FROM ABOVE
Re: Panerai 101
Which are the Subs? Are they the models with the crown lock?

Re: Panerai 101
243 IMO is the most badass and easy to sell if you ever desire to..
Re: Panerai 101
i also have a 312 so I have my "dressier" PAM and my "Badass" PAM....

Re: Panerai 101
Panerais are essentially broken down into two lines - Luminor and Radiomir. The Luminors have the crown guard, Radiomirs have a different case shape and no crown guard. One flavor of Luminor is the Submersible, which is a diver with dive bezel and higher level of water resistance. Lots of detail/photos at panerai.com.marchone wrote:Which are the Subs? Re: Panerai 101
Submersibles and Luminor cases both have the distinctive crown guard.
Radiomir cases do not and more like a cushin case (and different lubgs, too)
after that a check list should include in no order:
patinted dial or sandwich dial, the latter having a two piece dial that has the cut outs sections to show the lume (3D)
standard case or the 1950's case
second hand or not
date or not
I'm sure others will be along with in depth info - in the mean time narrow your options down cased on your choices and good luck!

Re: Panerai 101
The two watches you mention are Radiomirs--more of a vintage look- no crown guard...
*the 512 is a newer model; it's a 42MM w/a sandwich case-- in-house mov't (I think)
this one is dressier looking...
*the 292 is such a sweet watch---ceramic black seal--45MM with a COSC Unitas 6497
------------
I would look at the Panerai web site....
Radiomirs and Luminors
Broken into historic and contemporary
There are 40MM, 42MM (fewer), 47MM cases....

Re: Panerai 101
Thanks, guys. The PAM website makes more sense now after your collective explanations.

Re: Panerai 101
If anything catches your eye ask for feedback. It's likely one of us has had the watch or similar. However, don't let the PAM site be your only gauge. Panerai changes designs quite often and a good selection of watches wont be reflected on their site. For example, if you fall in love with a 305, but realize the price is out of touch it's likely that PAM has an earlier model thats within reason on styling and much cheaper. You should look at the PAM 176.
Also, i second the gent on the 243. Covers all bases for me.
Good luck.

Thanks. That's why I asked. Inquiring here is a lot better than spending months wading through WUS and TZ. I'm not fond of the crown lock and it seems to come on the larger cases which I'm also not fond of. The 512 and 292 I posted about are the first PAMs that got my attention. I know now that I prefer the Radiomir line. But I'm in the very early stages of learning about them.koda240 wrote:If anything catches your eye ask for feedback. Re: Panerai 101
If you're leaning towards Radiomirs, take a look at the 190. It's been out of production for several years but they come up for sale occasionally. One of only two (I believe) Panerais to contain a JLC movement, the 190 has JLC's 8-day manual wind movement with a power reserve indicator on the back. A really great Rad that I think is undervalued at the moment. Here's mine on a Micah V-Dark.marchone wrote:Thanks. That's why I asked. Re: Panerai 101
The 292 is awesome, you can't go wrong there.
Re: Panerai 101
292 is likely one of the coolest ceramic watches you can get. It doesn't hurt that Drew's pics make u wanna sell shit to own one. I will say that I tried on a 183 awhile back for about two seconds and it didnt have the cool factor i was looking for. Perhaps it was the strap, but wasnt my thing for sure.

I'm in the minority here. I like black watches, and I like Seikos.

The copper accents throw that one off for me. Otherwise I love do-it-all watches. It just needs a 24-hour hand.
