Just like any metal equipment in or around the ocean it should be rinsed with freshwater periodically and immediately after direct exposure.

Chris is spot-on. The "story" is that he treated it with liver of sulphur, or something to that effect. In normal atmosphere, that bronze should assume a lovely light black, almost pvd'ish finish, or it can be easily treated to maintain its natural beauty.
