Panerai and the Golden Ratio
Golden Ratio (or Divine Proportion) has long been regarded as the secret to beauty in people, architecture, photography and more relative to our discussion, product design. I'm no expert so you can read extensively about it online, but basically the idea behind it is: If you divide a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length divided by the longer part.
here is a simple picture to show the ratio equation:
if you apply this philosophy into your design, we are "wired" to like it - like the Parthenon, The Mona Lisa or Pamela
So back to Panerai - I found this animation (as in not mine) on the interwebs that shows how the Golden Ratio incorporated thusly.
Watch the red rectangles that appear all over...each rectangle is the Golden Ratio.....

I knew there was a reason I liked them.

I used it designing my house... the most basic concept in design.

That's a very cool animation. It would be interesting to see one done one on, say, an oyster perpetual. Can't just be OP...

Read about this on TRF awhile back - a casual reference to the design thought behind the new maxi case. Found the thread, and even found that I had commented in it.Sidheguitarist wrote:That's a very cool animation. It would be interesting to see one done one on, say, an oyster perpetual. Re: Panerai and the Golden Ratio
yeah, I'm sure this is applied to more than just Panerai, but the animation features Panerai so it's here
Matt - as this philosophy is brand agnostic, you could move it to a more public forum if needed
Thanks

Re: Panerai and the Golden Ratio
Mmm...gotta say I'm not really seeing it. There are those shapes there in general terms, and with some imagination I would add, but the watch itself does not feel like it uses the proportions in any central way. I could find those shapes all over my kitchen too and I assure you its not masterpiece of design
