Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
I have been thinking about Speedmaster and have seen lots of articles
and threads about 3570 (Hesalite) and the 3573 (Sapph Sandwich).
I've read all the comments:
* The 3570 is warmer with the Hesalite
* It's the real moon watch and so on...
* Hesalite scratches easily so get the Sapphire (about $780 more)
Here's my question---I understand the purpose of Hesalite and I know
it can be scratched. I've seen folks say that all you need is some Polywatch
and you can remove the scratches...
Have any of you done this? is it that easy?
Does the continual use of the polywatch impact the crystal at all?
Thoughts? Any other insights or comments would be great...

Polywatch is great. Just a little dab on the crystal, some rubbing and bingo, the scratches are gone. I believe the crystal is 2-3 mm thick so it will take a many years of removing scratches. Ive had my speedy for a year now and only polished once.
Polywatch is an abrasive solvent so the abrasive action smoothes the surface while the solvent dissolves the residue into the scratches. Kinda like a Zamboni for a speedy.
The real question of which one to buy should be based on the display back and not the crystal composition. The 1863 is more decorative and a joy to look at, but not worth the $780 difference imo since its on the backside. You can do the conversion to a display back for about $400 or so if you would like to have one later down the road, but the 1861 is not the beauty of the 1863.
Good luck with your decision but the hesalite is not an issue with the speedy.

Re: Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
Why not get a hesalite and then just swap the crystals if you scratch it / don't like it. I guess you could find generic sapphire for way less than $780 (perhaps for even a fraction of that price) once you search for it.. I mean, no way I would give $780 more just for sapphire crystal..
Re: Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
I had the sapphire sandwich one.
The display back is super nice.
They come fs used for between 2 and 2.5k if you're patient.

Thanks--the 3570 has the Omega 1861 and the 3573 has the 1863...
I am guessing that the 1863 is a more decorative version of the 1861..
I might just wait and see what comes up on the Sales Forums and go
from there...Unless I get impatient...there's a good chance of that...

The hesalite and sapphire are not interchangeable.

You could also wait for a 3572 to come up for sale. The best of both worlds: Hesalite top and sapphire back with the 1863.
Re: Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
Yes--just missed out on one...

I like the original warmer look with the hesalite. But i would kill for hesalite front and sapphire back.

Re: Speedmaster 3570 and the Hesalite
My old Heuer Calculator has a thick ass acrylic crystal. It scratches (micro scratches) easily, but also buffs out to new easily. Toothpaste or brasso works in a pinch, but Polywatch is the bomb. Personally, I'm a cool caseback fan. The caseback on the Moonwatch is the shit IMO. Yea, the display back is very nice, but the metal caseback looks really cool too. I'd get the Hesalite because I'm a cheap bastard that would use the money saved to buy a variety of cool straps for my new Speedy. There are at least 3 or 4 strap combos that are a must have for that thing. Then there are those expensive ass Omega deployants .... $$$$$

Good choice Mike, ime sure you wont regret it at all. I hav'nt got around to buying Polywatch yet so i use Brasso,it works a treat and has the hesalite looking new in seconds. The display back conversion looks good but the 3570's case back is pretty perfect as it is. -Andy
