Omega's Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional

Post by AtomicTom » Fri Jun 21, 2019 10:08 am

You have probably have seen this everyone. It's Omega's Seamaster Planet
Ocean Ultra Deep Professional, and it's the world's deepest dive watch.

This watch actually went along on Adventurer Victor Vescovo's submersible
dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench earlier this May. Diving to an
amazing 10,928m in depth. Thanks to the watch actually having case body,
case back, bezel, and crown constructed out of cutoffs of the submersibles
titanium hull, and wide viewport-like sapphire crystal too.

In addition, you even have the use of liquid metal to avoid the use of
polymer seals, and give better sapphire to case body assembly. As well
as special Manta lugs, METAS certified chronometer movement, and it's
all tested to 15,000m guys.

Omega just can't help being Rolex's little brother. "We made a deep sea challenge too! We call it `deepER sea challenge'. It's even more challengering so take that!".

I think watch companies are just trolling us now
Maybe I'm staring the obvious here but this watch was not intended to be sold commercially, so it's lack of practicality isn't really a big issue.

That's like saying that designing an F1 car that gets 0.2 mpg and can hit 225mph is pointless because it's impractical to commute in. It's simply a technology showcase with possible trickle down applications.

Oh, and you can't time a dive with a rock ;)

No, this is like designing that F1 car without a steering wheel! It’s a technology showcase that removed the defining characteristic of the technology it was trying to push the limits on.

And you can’t dive with this Omega either!

Every dive watch with WR > 300m is pointless Image

But this definitely extends ylthe pointless.

Rolex did basically the same thing with the deep sea challenge, and it was just as unwearable and only meant to be a prototype. But the point is that Rolex did basically the same thing with the deep sea challenge, so...

Maybe I'm not following your line of reasoning but this Omega is a timing device that can be strapped to a wrist for use during diving. It nay not be practical to wear in day to day situations but it's defining characteristics seem to be intact.

I do like the baby blue dial accents though.

And I just noticed you said more or less the same thing first, which makes my comment unintentionally ironic.

I’m going to agree with Jacob for a change on this one.

As a new skywalker owner they’d be better off staying in the space watch niche and offer a Mars diver with 200m WR on the off chance astronauts eventually encounter 1mm of ice on Mars in our lifetime

The PO is a great watch but too young a model and nowhere near Rolex clout for these shenanigans.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they issue a special wearable commemorative version with the same dial and bezel.

Could market it as a dive weight that tells the time.

Exactly. And the Deep Sea prototype was 28.5mm thick and steel.

The style on this one is gorgeous.
