Incoming.....Planet Ocean 8900

Post by hoppyjr » Fri Jan 05, 2018 1:39 pm

Just in. I’ve finally found Planet Ocean perfection. At less 98% perfection. I’ll say from the start; the only thing I’d change is to use 20 or 22 lug width, rather than the oddball 21. At least Omega is consistent in using 21’s in other recent models.

The 43.5 size is the Goldilocks PO. Thinner and less bulky than the 45.5 I’ve owned and flat case back makes it wear like a dream.

Bracelet comes stock with the push button adjustable clasp, with fold out divers extension. The end links don’t have a center section that pushes out (if that makes sense) so the bracelet drapes well and would fit smaller wrists as well as large. While the end links look like those on a Rolex 14060, these Omega are solid.

The Master Coaxial movement is well known and apparently very accurate.

The bezel on the 8500 is ceramic, but this 8900 uses the nicer Liquidmetal technology that was first found on the 2500 LE and later used on the 8500 titanium. It’s gorgeous.

The dial is also made of polished ceramic, just the same as the Dark Side of The Moon Speedmaster. It’s deep black, but appears dark grey in some lighting. When paired with the Liquidmetal bezel the result is spectacular.

Some quick photos.

After picking it up from the post office, I stopped by the Omega Boutique for bracelet sizing. While there I tried on the same watch with the blue dial.

Good news; the new blue is very similar to the blue used in the titanium 8500, but Omega finally uses a color matched date wheel.

The one I tried on had a very cool strap on deployant clasp. It’s a fully waterproof strap, using a rubber strap base and having real alligator on the exterior. The bottom, sides, and pin holes are rubber, which should provide for a long service life. I really liked it. A lot.

Some quick photos.

Congrats Ed. Hard to keep up with what you still have, SD and 45.5 Ti 8500 are still here? Wonder how it compares to 45.5 Ti side by side?
Still have EZM 1.1 and U1 pro?

Thanks.

My small collection has been a constant state of change, but I’m trying to find a happy place.

Current stable is PO, SD, 1.1, Weiss, and inbound SBP053.

15mm I believe.

I’ve compared to my EZM 1.1 which is 16.4 and the PO is thinner.

I’ve owned the 2500 series in both 42mm and 45.5 size (multiple times), in addition to having owned several 8500 45.5’s. I can say without reservation; this is the best Planet Ocean I’ve experienced.

Seems about the same as PO 2500 45.5, but this one has a thicker mid case area, but relatively flat case back, where the 2500 has a slim mid-case and more protruding case back, as I recall.

That’s not bad. I had the SMPc chrono and that was I think 18mm. Which paired with 42mm width was just not working for me.

Dang, Hop, that is a good looking watch. The liquid metal bezel looks great, as does the ceramic dial. Just really, really, nice. Congratulations.

Thanks fellas.

I mentioned 98% perfect, here are the two things I’d change. Maybe three:

- use a standard lug width of 20 or 22 (although this 21 does seem nicely proportionate).

- I prefer the looks of the end link design as used on the 8500 series, but I recognize that this style allows for better fit on a wider range of wrist sizes.

- use a single color lume, not the blue everywhere and green on minute hand and bezel pip. It’s a gimmick and I prefer consistency.

Those are relatively minor issues and I have no intention of letting them get in my way of enjoying this watch.

I like it. A lot. Good size, 15mm is not thick at all for that size and Omega does a good job with L2L on the PO's. Win.

Nice looking watch. It is too big for me, otherwise I'd ask for dibs on the follow-up sale.

The same watch is available in 39.5 size too.

I can’t get the blue on gator out of my head. I can see that being added later in the year.

That watch really sucks. The proportions are terrible and a 19mm lug spacing is total ass. I really wanted to replace my 42mm po2500 with one... and then I saw it in person.
