First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
First off, thanks to Matt for making my transition from the kiddie pool to the deep end so quick and painless. I received this vintage 3592.50 beauty when I arrived home today.
Understand this comes from a good home here, so PM me if you know who I have to thank for trading with Wu.
Speedy was running +30 spd, so I took it to the Omega boutique in Boca. The manager had never seen this reference and thought it was a mod! Running much better after being demagnetized. Maybe +8 spd now. What should be expected timing wise from a calibre 863 before considering a service?
Also, any way to date the production from the serial number? I saw the Chuck Maddox link to a production history of calibre 861s in the 4833xxxxx range would be '96-'97, but that 863s were not necessarily on the same timeline.

Re: First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
Congrats, I have the exact same model and I love it.
Re the production date.. I wanted to date mine, and discovered that there are several tables online that give vastly different years to production. One Chuck Maddox table suggested '85, another update Maddox table states '91 !.. So I hunted around and found this:
A well regarded Speedy expert who worked with Maddox determined “My friend Chuck Maddox, the Speedy Pro guru and now sadly RIP, and I came to the conclusion after years of research that no movement number (they are not S/Ns) is an accurate indicator of the date of manufacture due to the parts bin factor.
In short, the charts floating around, including Hartmann's, are nothing more than "gestimates". Unfortunately, Chuck died before adding such a disclaimer on his site.”

All I know is that is a magnificent looking speedy
Re: First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
On the movement, my personal experience with the 861/863/1861/1863 is that +8 seconds/day isn't outside the bounds of what would be "normal." That said, depending on the age of the watch, it might be worth having it serviced anyway (assuming you're planning on keeping it).
Not sure on the date of production - the charts I've been able to find on Google only reference the 861/1861.

Amazing. Thanks, Stewart. So, with this reference we are really just left to assume the window of production was for the mid-90's, and it had to fall somewhere after the LE Apollo XI's?Heuerville wrote: “...no movement number (they are not S/Ns) is an accurate indicator of the date of manufacture due to the parts bin factor.”

I can tell you that the one that Stewart has used to be mine- it came from a dude on TZ who bought it from Jacek.
I'll try to find the sales add, but I'm pretty sure it was from 1989.
Mine ran a little fast too, but to be honest it's one watch that I didn't really pay close attention to with time keeping.
I also know with this rare model that the wording on the case back was slightly different than the others.
It's beautiful.

Yeah, probably easier to find out from collector knowledge when this model was sold.TSD wrote:Amazing. Thanks, Stewart. Re: First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
I'm not an expert but have been an amateur speedy buff for some time now and have been really reading up to possibly add a vintage speedy. Been causally looking for a 105.003 for some time now but have never pulled the trigger for some reason.
Does the movement serial match the watch? How many jewels?
Back in the early 90s Omega decided to add a jewel to the 863 from 17j=>18j essentially making it a transitional movement before the 1863 (which also has 18j). Even some late 861s have an extra jewel. The reason I say "transitional" is because the 1863 used rhodium to plate the brake which added more corrosion resistance as opposed to the 863 which used what I think was a copper rich gold alloy. The 1863 also had beefier movement mounts.
Beautiful watch!
As for service, I wouldn't touch it if it's 8 seconds fast. My 3570.50 is 8 seconds slow. Plenty of parts for these so cross that bridge when it really goes out of synch. I also wouldn't plan on swimming with it either, though, or any vintage piece.

Re: First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
Thanks, Eric. Yes, the production number on the 863 movement matches the number on my case. The movement has 18 Jewels and appears to actually have the extra jewel. This one differs from Stewart's, and isn't the Apollo XI limited edition from the late 80s - early 90s. They replaced the Apollo XI text on the display back with Professional, but otherwise has the same gilt finish.sierra11b wrote:Does the movement serial match the watch? How many jewels?

Congratulations on the beautiful speedy, it looks great
Re: First Speedy Post, Newbie Questions
Mine was a '92. Come to think of it, I wonder if this was my old 3592.50.
