Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
Will I be shunned for it on this dive watch forum? I doubt it... but here goes nothing!
I used to own a 3570.50 and flipped it because I wanted to buy my wife a DJ. It was the right move at the time as my wife proudly wears her Rhodium dial DJ on SJ... Happy wife happy life, right?
But since then I've wanted the Speedy back and am now in a position to reacquire one. The question remains: New reference or clearance 3570.50? The entire kit looks pretty damn sweet and some reputable board sellers now have them available for around $3850… But on the other hand the 3570.50 is cheaper, a price can be negotiated, and I prefer the non-9300 pin-style bracelet in that it never failed me or required loctite. In fact, adjusting the pin-braceelt is the initial right of passage for ownership considering all the watch represents in this user-friendly era.
Those of you who have one (or owned one) know it isn't for everyone… It's usually off a few seconds here or there, you have to occasionally polish the hesalite, you might have to source a half-link from otto frei for that perfect fit, it costs more to service being a chrono, and your pussy virgin fingers hurt as calluses have yet to form before the first month of ownership. But man is it timeless and those chamfers!
I want it back because as a geek and long time aviation buff it represented an era in American history where the T38 drivers and pencil pushers solved problems with copious amounts of caffeine, nicotine, elbow grease, and good ol' know-how and ingenuity… An era sadly long forgotten but one I'd like to teach my young son when the time is right and I can pass-down the watch.
So I invite all DWC members to post their Speedy Pros in an effort to reinforce the decision I am considering once again.

Recently sold mine, and miss it more than I thought I would.

I had two of them and will most likely have another knowing me. Superb watches, these
Re: Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
I'm wearing mine right now. I bought it BNIB a few months ago (3570.50). The new package is definitely intriguing, but I'm generally not one to change straps all that often, which would be the main value of the new release. As to the bracelet, I'd prefer screws, but the pins are fine. Once it's been fitted to my wrist, it doesn't really matter anymore (I did take it to a jeweler to be fitted - I didn't feel like wrestling with it).
I also think you might be able to buy the new package separate from the watch from some retailers, at least according to this article:
http://www.speedywatches.com/breaking-n ... packaging/
If that's true, you could always get the package sometime down the road.
I say go for it. It's a great watch

I'm wearing my Gemini LE today. I love it very much. It manages to be both somewhat large (which people seem to require these days) and comfortable.
Re: Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
You can buy the package a la carte but it would be pretty cool just to have everything all tucked into that case. It reminds me of the clever packaging being discussed in the main forum on 6B watches Mk1 and Mk2. At the end of the day I realize i'm not wearing the case on my wrist and may try and find the 3570.50 for much less, but the set is tempting.JBZ wrote:I'm wearing mine right now. Aside from early fliegers it's one of those watches I often think of when a thread pops-up on watch size trends. I was one of those who required sourcing a half-link but once I did the fit on bracelet was top notch.JP Chestnut wrote:I'm wearing my Gemini LE today. I love it very much. I need two, which is slightly longer than one full link, but smaller than a full link and a half link.sierra11b wrote:Aside from early fliegers it's one of those watches I often think of when a thread pops-up on watch size trends. Get the new reference.
The kit is nice, and the nato andvelcro straps are very well done. You get a loupe, tool, and the newer bracelet with the screws.
I just picked it up. Was the right thing to do.

Does the new 9300 bracelet come with a half-link?
Re: Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
Nope - no 1/2 link with the 3750.50 new reference.
It is worth it for the differences. The new nato are much much better than the standard maratac.

Knowing the bracelet is the same dimensionally and that I needed the half link with the old reference I wonder if otto frei offers a half-link for the 9300 speedy bracelet?

Re: Re-lusting for the Speedy Pro...
I got this used one about 3-4 years ago at a NAWCC regional in Pasadena before I moved out of Calf if you check the NAWCC web site they have two regionals one in Pasadena another in San Diego it's usually 3 days Friday, Saturday, Sunday one of those days they open it up to the public if your not a member nothing but vintage watches and clocks for sale I paid 1400.00 not a bad price compared to a new one. It's worth a drive from Sacramento I think January is the next one in Pasadena you never know what you will find the seller had 5 for me to choose from.

You have already figure out the "what". The what you want. The "how" is so damn easy!
Many of these poor bastards buy watches multiple times, because they can't decide on the on WTF! Go for it!

Eric (S11b)- did you make a decision? I confess that I've been following this thread a bit while I tried to make up my mind about getting one for myself ( I did... thanks, Zack! ) over the past month or so.
I agree with your rationale, too. It's an evocative watch. To me it is a lot like the Tutima MilChrono. Very Cold War, very "America! F#ck Yeah!"
