I was curious about the crown sealing on the EZM 9, 1.1, and U1, so I asked Sinn. We know the Rolex Triplock uses 5 gaskets, but Sinn advised they use 3; one in the crown and two in the tube. This seems better than many brands as most use only one. In fact, the Grand Seiko divers only use a single gasket (as per Grand Seiko service).

My guess is a single o-ring in the tube, maybe two.

Good info Ed! U1 is designed for 1000+ meters of WR, so it doesn't surprise me that the crown tube design is better than a Seiko diver designed for 200-300m. Once they designed a 1000m crown and crown tube,they likely just used the same on on the other EZM watches.

German's love to do overkill on design. Damasko puts a 3 gasket, self lubricating screw-in crown system on their 100m Pilot watches. I'm assuming the only reason they aren't rated for higher WR is because they use a thinner crystal to keep the watch at 12mm thick.

There is a cultural difference playing out here though. Efficiency is seen as elegant and desirable in Japanese culture. From that perspective Rolex needing 5 seals to achieve what Seiko engineers achieve with 1 isn't better.

In all my time on watch forums I have never heard of a GS Diver failing. I doubt you ever will.
