DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled? Updated to show the NEW 2!
For a DYI battery change on an oil filled Sinn - what silicone oil weight is suggested (10wt?) Any other helpful hints to eliminate/minimize bubbles? I read somewhere that a small piece of sponge in the case, soaked with oil, allows for slight compression to help with the bubble issue.
All suggestions taken gratefully!

+2. Sinn Germany doesn't even trust RGM to perform this service.marchone wrote:You have major cojones.
I believe one of the steps is to place the watch (submerged in silicone based oil) into a vacuum chamber to suck out any air bubbles.

Agree... this is one I wouldn't tackle myself.

Don't do it Seth. Why risk ending up with a paperweight?
This is from Watchbuys:
This is from Watchbuys:
“Both WatchBuys and Sinn clearly state that under no circumstances should you attempt to open or service any Sinn oil filled watch. The oil used by Sinn is proprietary, and opening the watch requires a special machine located in Frankfurt which removes the oil, cleans debris from the watch and flushes the case several times. Another proprietary machine is used to refill the case once the movement is cleaned, battery is changed and seals are replaced. This machine sets the correct oil pressure and ensures that the water resistance rating is met, along with the correct movement of the diaphragm on the case back.
Using your own oil is very likely to damage the hands, dial and movement and will cause other long-term issues.

The damn battery costs $25 by itself... so the $8 for silicone oil seems pretty modest.

$500 battery changes will make men do things. I've been hesitant to do send my EZM over for service.
Anybody know if I could send my EZM-2 to Watchbuys and then have them ship to Sinn?

Sell it to me at a good price and you won't have to worry about it!

Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
Are you sure it needs a battery? Based on my math, I'd be willing to bet a previous owner had it changed at since point. It might be a good idea to inquire with Sinn prior to tampering with it unnecessarily.BBK357 wrote:I got your fix.kfalk wrote:$500 battery changes will make men do things. Did you buy that EZM2 from ebay that didn't have oil in it?

Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
What does a trip to Germany to change the battery cost with these?
Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
I was quoted €188for service + €90 for shipping to the US. I'm guessing the cost of shipping it to them is not included in the €90? So around $320 and possibly more to ship it to them?dnslater wrote:What does a trip to Germany to change the battery cost with these?
Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
Last time I had a battery swap on an EZM2, it was $225 plus required EMS shipping, and about 7 weeks. With that as the alternative, why not spend $33 and a little quality time with it and see if it works out? Worst case scenario, the pieces get put in a ziplock bag and shipped to Frankfurt!

Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
I recall paying about $100 both ways FedEx from Singapore to Frankfurt for a warranty repair. So 90 euro should be round trip or "return". $320 for a battery change. Over 7 years that's $45 a year to run the watch providing no other service is required.
$700 plus a $320 battery change was a steal for the UX Matt posted earlier today.

only accurate watches are interesting
Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
The guy in Matt's post estimated $500 for service. Maybe it's gone up a scosh?

Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
The easy solution is to sell it to Seth or I and you come out ahead. I hear good things about these Sinn watches. I think I would be willing to try one out.kfalk wrote:The guy in Matt's post estimated $500 for service. Maybe it's gone up a scosh?
Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
tim from watchbuys said $175 for the battery change last weekend. didn't mention the shipping costs.
Re: DIY Battery Change on Oil Filled?
No idea of what they use but I have seen a few posts of people using a product from 3M called Flourinert. Here is a post of someone putting this into a CW watch, with some description and devices he used:

It seems too messy for me but surely cool and interesting. Check it out Seth, maybe this can help?
