Any Leads on a ZUZ?

Post by namor » Tue Oct 20, 2015 8:20 am

I know its a fool's errand, but I'm trying to find an EZM1 ZUZ. If anyone knows of one that may be pried from its owner, please let me know!

There are so few out there, that I'd think your best bet would be to post WTBs in the relevant places (e.g., MWR). Also look at the old FS posts and ping the sellers/buyers.

If I get it, I'll wear it every fucking day!

But, is it a zuz if it was just a small run made for Japanese collectors and nit the issued watch to the real zuz guys?

A printed logo doubles its value. No different than a Comex Rolex.

This is the rub for me. I'm totally OK with the premium for a ZUZ EZM1, just as I'd pay the premium for a COMEX dial Sub (if I could afford one!). But I've been wrestling all morning with the ZUZ dial on a watch that wasn't issued to the ZUZ. Would anyone pay a premium for a Rolex Sub that had a genuine COMEX dial, but was never issued to a COMEX diver?
These Japanese watches are, as TR might say, "All hat and no cattle". It also nags at me that the bracelet and bezel insert are the new style, like the LE versions, and not the older correct ones.

I might still try for it, but my head and my heart are arguing.

Well, if I were to pay a premium for an issued watch, I would only do it if it was really "issued".

My 2 cents.

I can see that... but its not like you'll lose money on it. I've seen 2 for sale in the past i don't know how long. This one and Vic Boyds.

It all comes down to what you want to pay - "issued" or "non-issued."

These don't come up often either way, and an "issued" would probably command much more.

To me, the dial is the dial, and that is what you are paying the premium for. Would you buy a base ezm1 that was issued - and pay a premium. I highly doubt it.

Well, I did pay a premium for one of the EZM2s that was actually issued and then refurbed. Didn't have the original dial, but was the actual watch worn by a GSG9 Johnny. So to me, provenance is important over looks.

The bezel insert on the one for sale has the big triangle in use since the LE editions were made in 2005, and the SEL bracelet has hex screws in it, both also in use only since the LEs.

There were 22 watches actually issued, and another 45 dialed for Japan; so there are only 67 ZUZ watches in the world. Still a very exclusive group of watches.

Buy this, and then upgrade later when you find an "issued' version. You won't lose here.

I can't remember the last time I saw a zuz for sale. If this were an issued zuz, you would probably be pushing another 2-3K on top of this.

IM not sure you are correct on the bezel.
The LE editions had screw secured bezels that are found on the newer Sinn line up line up like the 103 TESTAF.
The triangles did change mid design, the old ones had the smaller, then the larger, then the LE had an actual change in bezel.

I have an old style bezel with the small triangle if thats what is holding you back. Im sure we can work something out if you proceed with this beauty.

That is correct on the bezels. I have had each of them. The LE bezel screwed down.

The bezel is the correct one for this watch, but the insert is not. The 3H watches have a small triangle at 12; the Ar watches a little bit bigger triangle; and the LE had a squared off triangle (actually a trapezoid) like the one on this watch.
EZM1trio.jpg
Not a deal breaker for sure, but at $6750 one would like some originality. Bracelet, too, is from the LE era, not original to a 503.0249 serial number.

The original bezel is included.

The bracelet shouldn't matter too much.
