EZM1 Price History

Post by namor » Fri Feb 06, 2015 10:29 am

With too much time on my hands, I decided to review prices on EZM1 sales from 2010 to present. I only used trades in which I had first hand knowledge of the prices, since what they are posted for, and what they actually sell for, are usually two very different numbers. Also, for the sake of sanity, I omitted all BAPE version sales regardless of price (also omitted were the 2 or 3 ZUZ/ZTZ sales). This is admitedly a not-very-scientific survey, but it reveals a few interesting things.

I have 23 data points from 2010 - 2015, with sure dollar amounts of sales. The first thing that pops out is that a bubble formed in early 2012 and lasted until late 2013. The second thing that is obvious is that the pre bubble prices were pretty consistent in the $2800 to $3000 range, and that the post bubble pricing seems to have settled - for now - around $3500 give or take a bit. Whether that price stays firm, or is subject to further downward slide, is unclear at the moment.

Less clear from the numbers is the fact that many of the earlier sales were for well-used, rough condition watches, whereas nearly all of the more recent sales are for pretty clean examples. I don't think that has much impact on these though, given how many have been sent to Sinn for re-furb.

I can't really draw any conclusion about the future direction from the chart, other than it would seem to be trending lower. I'm biased about the model, of course, and think that as it slowly moves into becoming a vintage piece, with only ~3,200 ever produced, and a strong military connection attached to it the prices should only get stronger over time. If the prices continue to fade, I may just have to invest!

as someone who purchased at the height of that bubble, i must say i'm really not that bummed about it and have no regrets. i absolutely love the watch and it continues to bring me joy each and every time I wear it. sometimes there are intangibles at work in this hobby, and for me, this watch epitomizes that.

The other thing is disentangling EZM1 prices from the overall market. Everything seems weak today.

I cannot remember for a fact if I bought during the bubble...Todd??? Was I a bubble buyer?...I think I was, anywhoo...I think Jason already said it best:

Yeah, can't really add anything except I know for a fact I will NEVER lose money on it...because I also know I will never sell it ;)

NOTE: There was also the release of the 250 EZM1 LE's by Sinn in early 2008 that may have created a surge in interest. How exactly that would drive sales of older models, while simultaneously global economies were in flames around us...I am not sure. The LE sales might have actually hit before the "bubble burst", Lehman Brothers went belly up in September 2008.

Interesting analysis. I thought for sure I saw prices hit $5K at the peak. Maybe when the final 250 LEs arrived?

It looks like the X-axis is just sales, set chronologically but maybe not on a scale (only Seth can say for sure - each data point looks to be pretty evenly spaced). Depending on where over time the data points come from, if they clump together a lot, you may not be able to tell anything about correlations between other events, unless the clusters are close to each other and perhaps to another events like the release of the 250 LE pieces which came out in early 2008 I believe. Even then, if they cluster up, it's all a guess.

I'm hoping they get back to pre-bubble prices so I can pick up another

I've seen a steadying of the price in general even taking account the differences between 3H, Ar & LE variations; in order of value perhaps?:

ZTZ
ZUZ
LE
Ar & 3H (roughly on a par?)
BAPE

Then outliers such as ZTZ right handed, Taiwanese SWAT, 'blackened' ones etc

I've worn my LE solidly for 5 years through all normal life and some more extreme circumstances like multi day ultras such as Marathon des Sables, Madagascar/Atacama ultra, numerous mountain marathons and all the training before hand, using the chrono function every day pretty much. I couldn't imagine a better partner.

My LE is due back from its first service after 7 years, fortunately I have another to fill the gap...

Everyone has their favourites and the EZM1 is mine.

That's the way to do it. When you find a watch you really like, get two.

Love the pic. It brings out the faded dial and bezel. Love it.

Recent update - a nice Ar just sold on ebay at $3600, and there were two others in the past couple of weeks in the $3400-3500 range that sold there. The 2 currently offered at $4000 are languishing....
