HELP please....winding issue

Post by hoppyjr » Sat Jul 12, 2014 11:22 am

Hey guys,

I just snagged that Sinn Military Type III from Vig2000 on WUS. It arrived about 20 min ago, so I set it to local time and date first, but I may have a problem. When I went to manually wind the watch, it almost feels like it's "slipping" then the crown has a grating/popping feel, as if it were slipping a gear or something. I understand these run the ETA 2836 and I don't think I've owned one before.

Does this sound like normal "overwind" protection or does it sound like a problem?

Thanks in advance -

Hoppy

I've had an eta 2892 and it felt like t was slipping... Thing is that it was super smooth.
So do you feel the regular grind then it feels like its "slipping"? Or do you not feel/hear the regular winding?

I don't feel much of the normal resistance when winding, just a light resistance and then it feels like it's slipping. The crown actually feels like clicking or skipping gears.

There is the normal winding sound, then there is the slight clicking sound when the overwound protection kicks in. This is a different feel & sound, best described as slipping gears. It has no resistance for part of the turn, then clicks and you can even feel the crown clicking.

The issue is much less pronounced - even almost non-existent - if I put slight outward pressure while winding it (slightly pulling out crown while winding).

I've had a similar problem on an old L5100 watch, but never got it looked at. I'm guessing it's a problem with the crown position being slightly off and the winding gears not meshing completely, but I'm no movement expert. You need Al Archer from WUS or someone similar to weigh in.

After lots of research, it may be normal. It is a very smooth winding piece for sure. I found if I apply a tiny bit of outward pressure while winding, the slipping feel is gone. Might be the stem, possibly a wee bit long causing the disconnect to remain partially engaged (the part that de-couples when screwing down the crown). Either way, 2.5 years of warranty left so I think it's best to keep her. These don't pop up often and should go up in value, being a limited edition.

If anyone has thoughts on it, please do chime in - I want to be as sure as possible. :)

HELP please....winding issue

Post by hoppyjr » Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:10 pm

Update:

It appears my worry was not necessary. I let the watch run down for about 28 hours, the manually wound it. When I did this there was no crown "slipping" feel, until it had been fully wound.

I'm well aware of the overwind protection built-in to ETA movements, but this one felt different. I'm happy that there is no issue.

FWIW, the movement is a 2895-2, which is apparently the small seconds version built off the 2892.

In any case, I'm happy now :)

I did a second test and let her run down about 28--30 hours and it wound perfectly, so that "winding issue" was apparently overwind protection. Peace of mind. :)
