Tudor Ranger 7966

Post by smellody » Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:19 pm

Tudor's offering for the mid 1960's Rolex Explorer market was the Ranger. First appearing in 1965, although that date is often disputed as the Ranger did not appear in a Tudor Catalog until 1969.

Cheaper than the Explorer, the Ranger was a bargain new and had the option of a date. Early 7966 date watches, like mine, were fited with the roulette date wheel with alternating red and black text. Watches were motivated with a Tudor signed ETA movement. Mine being the 2484 from '66ish

I wish I had this watch's history, but it is right as rain in the Pacific Northwest. This is important as the Ranger is the second most commonly faked watch on the interwebs following the Submariner. I like to think some sergeant major bought this watch new at the PX in the late 60's being too cheap to scratch up an extra $100 for the Rolex Explorer.

Many know the Ranger was reintroduced by Tudor in the mid 2010s as part of their heritage collection.

Here is my watch:

All 34 manly mm's of it!

Good to know the history. It's a shame that Tudor didn't print "Ranger" in their recent discontinued model.
The review mentioned, "....while the new Heritage Ranger features two straight cylindrical bars – something that could be found on the old Submariner 7923.".
So, what are that two straight cylindrical bars?

Beautiful piece, and as you said it's not easy to find a legit example.

I believe its a reference to the straight endlinks that appear on the bracelet of the Heritage model (as opposed to the fitted endlinks that appear on the original). It isn't a design choice that I particularly like.

I always found it interesting that Tudor offered the original Ranger and the Prince Oysterdate (modeled after the Rolex datejust) at 34mm instead of 36mm.

Cool looking watch, regardless.

It is interesting on the 34mm case.... I feel it wears just fine on the wrist.

I don't notice any difference from my 36mm Datejusts and 37mm early subs.

That is gorgeous . I believe I have a beat up version of the original bracelet for that watch in a bag somewhere. Sadly the head is long gone .

I’m not the most active member of this forum (I hate technology but I’ve caught a bad case of the watch sickness) but I’m here every day reading posts. This is why I love this place. How absolutely effing awesome of you Nick. I don’t actually know any of you guys but somehow feel like I do. This is a great community. Thanks to all of you for giving me a little bit of hope for humanity

@smellody
Nice Ranger...an excellent find and as you and others have noted a correct one is even harder to find... while it may not be the most valuable watch in your impressive collection you must have had some nervous anticipation with this one...

Looking good...looks like a screw is coming unthreaded in the bracelet in the last pic near the buckle...

Maybe that is just the hinge part out of alignment in the photo
