I’ll start this off - explorer II - $9000

Yes, it’s a V serial and yes it has the 3186, but faaak that’s nuts.

Amen. Completely crazy.

I’d love a no-date Sub, either new or old, but the prices keep me away. I know they will only get worse, but a $7500-9500 Sub doesn’t make sense when an equivalent Omega is sub-$4k.

Every time I look at prices for a 114060 it makes me feel better about what at the time seemed like an astronomical price for me to spend for a watch.

On the flip side, I can’t believe I sold my previous three(!) 114060’s for what I did :).

We won’t talk about the long gone 116600...

I had an explorer II with the 3186 - sold it to Doctor Wu a few years ago... Not nearly as nice as the one above, but MUCH cheaper. Great watch

Yeah Rolex sports models are nuts right now..

The prices are making me want to wait a year or so and then sell my James Cameron.

I sold my polar 3186 and made a little but no where near 9k. I was thinking about selling my 14060M but would never afford another the way it’s going.

Also, I’ve watching CHNR prices that are going up weekly if not daily

Also - a sure sign if the Apocalypse that I can but an A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Up & Down in either White Gold or Platinum for LESS than a SS Rolex BLNR

No one but Rolex saw this bubble coming.

It's all crazy. With the Explorer II's finally creeping up, it's pretty hard to find any sort of deal on a Rolex sports model now. You can still do okay with a 36mm explorer, but even those have crested $5k unless you settle for a beat up or no bracelet example.

The best deal in Rolex right now is probably a vintage 36mm datejust or something of the 34mm variety, but those aren't as appealing to most.

If I buy another Rolex anytime soon, I’ll sell or trade my James Cameron toward it. The only piece I like is the SD43, but I really don’t like the cyclops, so I’ll probably just hold this until they creep over $15k, then I’ll sell.

I hate the cyclops, but wear my 43 almost daily and luv it.

This is exactly my strategy as well. Target is a Red Sub - those prices are batshit crazy right now. I’ll wait.

I’ve seen some older Red Subs that I like, but they’re > $20k, and that’s bananas, in my opinion. Once the JC crests the $15k mark, ill sell mine, and just enjoy daily wearing my PO.

I just sold my black dial SubC for $10k cash after wearing it for a year. Thinking back to when I bought my hulk and Batman for $6600 each new from the AD in 2014... it’s insanity now.

Fark, $9K US, this model was the 1st Rolex I bought myself back in 2009 had the 3186 mvt. Exchanged this for a Pam with a dealer. I just wasn't wearing this watch. Zero regrets as I now have the 216570.

If you think the prices are crazy in the US, convert this to the Aus $ and weep. ATM I'd be paying over $20K for a JC.

Fortunately I bought most of my Rolex watches when the my AUS $ was parity with the US$.

^Same Jules, the price jacking plus the Aus dollar situation makes these eyewatering now.
I feel lucky I have a Sub and GMT, but I could pretty much never buy again. I saw a 16710 for $21k AUD on an Aus watch forum today!

Wow $21K for a GMT II, I swapped mine for a PAM 423 some time back. Again no regrets as I simply wasn't wearing the watch, the 423 is close to my daily wear. Again I'm really happy with my 216570 Polar, I find 40mm a little small for me, 42mm + I prefer. Still got my sight set on a JC, it's a time thing ATM, considering we've just started our renovations, watches have taken a back seat, just need to work out how I can include a $20K watch purchase in the home renovations, perhaps a very expensive small wall clock...

The way Rolex is headed, I’ll be more than happy with a Grand Seiko.

They way grand Seiko is headed you better get one quick - they seem to think they’re Rolex.

The question is will the prices ever go down? This is crazy!

If there's a recession (and eventually there will be), my guess is you'll see prices stabilize or perhaps go down a bit on pre-owned, particularly on more modern examples. But maybe with a few outliers, I don't think we'll see the return of mid-four figure prices for desirable sports models. And it really doesn't make a difference to most people if a really expensive model loses a certain amount of value. I can't afford a vintage Daytona at $45,000 anymore than I can afford one at $60,000.

As far as current models, Rolex seems to be driving the price spike on those because they're still very difficult to get at ADs.
