Rolex service

So my GMT2C works perfectly when given a little shake to get the movement going. At +8 a day, crown operates all functions as designed, etc, but from a dead stop, the crown does not wind the watch. When I received it, I could feel it wind for about six turns then I could tell it wasn't doing anything. Now it just doesn't wind it at all ;(
Anyway, took it to an AD and they said they'd send it off to California to get serviced and fix the problem, but their minimum charge is 600 bones for the service which they said "may fix the issue" (I call bs on that).
My questions to you smart guys - do you know what' may be wrong with the watch? Is there a cheaper way to get it fixed without dropping a grand on the repair/service?
The watch is 11 years old.

Paul, I can get it fixed for way cheaper than that with a few weeks turn around time. But it sounds like the keyless is having an issue. But I am not a watchmaker. Let me know and we can get it going asap.

That's like saying only send a Rolex to Rolex ... most people that know better agree not to send it to Rolex.

I had my GMT II serviced by Rolex Dallas. Very happy with their CS. Cost was $600 for service, including timing and case / bracelet refinishing. Any parts needed are extra. Comes w a 2 yr service guarantee.

While there are surely good private watchmakers, the Rolex service includes the Rolex warranty and pressure testing to the appropriate depth. It's also a plus if selling.

I thought about sending it to Rolex - they want 600 bucks for a service/polish.
I don't want the watch polished, although it probably needs servicing (?). I took it to an AD who is the biggest Rolex repair outfit in this area and he said he ships his watches to California to a "certified" Rolex watchmaker and gives me a 2yr warranty. I'm certain it's legit but it still costs $600 for the service in addition to any repair.
I suspect after Rolex or the guy in Cali find the issue with the winding, I could be in for a grand while they have my watch kinapped
I just want to do this incrementally: 1. Find out what's wrong with the watch and then 2. Have the option, after getting the bill for the repair, deciding on whether a service is needed or not.
Make sense?

Makes sense to me. My SD runs and winds, but the crown doesn't seem to want to go to the setting position, and I don't want to force it. A local shop has a Rolex certified watchmaker in house, and quoted $850 for a routine service from either their in house watchmaker, or sending it out to Rolex. I haven't taken it to a local AD yet, and that may be next since they also have a couple Rolex trained watchmakers.

So it's all or nothing with Rolex?? I know with Swatch/Omega, despite their faults at times, they basically inspect the watch and provide an estimate of repair/service, usually with optional-to-the-buyer items and you can then make a decision.

No, I got "optional" items listed on my estimate when I sent my SD to Dallas RSC. If you send it through an AD, RSC will not talk to you about the service - only to the AD who sent it in.

Makes sense to me. My SD runs and winds, but the crown doesn't seem to want to go to the setting position, and I don't want to force it. A local shop has a Rolex certified watchmaker in house, and quoted $850 for a routine service from either their in house watchmaker, or sending it out to Rolex. I haven't taken it to a local AD yet, and that may be next since they also have a couple Rolex trained watchmakers.
^^^This could be a weak spring on the crown or a keyless issue. We only fix the issue. A full service if need be. No reason to waste money.
