1972 Rolex Single Red Submariner FS

Post by logan2z » Sat Oct 15, 2016 8:01 am

I saw this on a Porsche forum I frequent and thought someone here might be interested. I'm not a Rolex guy at all so I don't know how desirable this particular piece is or whether the asking price is realistic, but thought I'd pass it along just in case.

You have to be a member of the forum to read the ad so I've copied the content here.

I don't wear this at all anymore and want to change out for something I will wear more often. Its a damn, really good example of a single red. Purchased through WatchUwant.com originally (which is owned by Govberg's so it was checked out mechanically before sale). Fat Font bezel, matching lume on hands and dial, lightly polished with full lugs, case reads 1680 and full serial number and legitimately keeps damn near perfect time. It has the original bracelet as well, with next to no stretch, original end links and even spring bars. It's a Mk. 3 dial. If you, or you know anyone that's interested, set them my way!

Photobucket seems to be not working the way I like and something up with the OTL photo upload, so apologies for inevitably having the pictures sideways. Ive got way more pictures, not sure why its being a pain, but PM me and Ill send you a ton.

Asking $13000. I'm not in a rush to sell it, and while its on a slightly higher side compared to a $10500 dollar head only with crushed pearl, thin font and re-lumed, mismatching hands, its a fantastic example.

Case looks nice, but the insert's pearl appears far too white to be original. However 5013 prices are making these look REALLY reasonable.

Price is on the high side, but not too insane. Slightly higher than what Jacek is offering, and he's a dealer. Private sale should be less.

Case does look ok, but more pics of the lugs would be good. I agree that the bezel insert must be a replacement, since it shows little wear/fading and the pearl is way too white to be original tritium.

I agree. However, watches that were "too expensive" early last year would be considered "well bought" now. A lot of people did well buying prime examples at the absolute top of the market and then holding them. That's not to say that this will continue, or even that this watch would be considered "prime" given a better set of macro shots.

I can't completely tell, but the plots look a bit odd in a few pictures. Definitely not as nice as some of the OG purchase vintage watches on TRF.

It's been a while since I saw a really great 16800 for anything less than  money. I still kick myself for not buying a mint, complete, and unpolished 1981 Sub for $4000. Why didn't I buy it? It was two years off from my birth year (same identical watch, just not the right case stamp)

Well I guess it's birth year or nothing. Too bad in 1974 it was a year of a bunch of Red Subs and SD's

Look on the bright side. Now that those cool watches have all been snapped up, you can over pay for a shitty condition Datejust!

True, but I would worry the market is peaking or has already peaked. While vintage has been doing well recently, the overall luxury watch market is not doing well at all. I would think that it's only a matter of time before the downturn hits vintage as well.

Also, red 1680's aren't exactly that rare. While the prices of super rare pieces may keep moving up, I'd speculate that more common pieces like this will start to see prices drop.

Either way, I'm glad I scratched my itch for these a while ago. ;)
