Re: Daytona demand
You have to give Rolex credit - they certainly know how to market. At a time when the luxury watch industry as a whole is lamenting declining sales, Rolex releases this unobtanium. So you walk into an AD and inquire about the Daytona. "Well, sir, we can add you to our exclusive five year waiting list. In the meanwhile, can we interest you in this Submariner/GMT/Datejust?"

In the meantime, I may finally pick up a second hand one.
Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?
Re: Daytona demand
There's a guy on TRF that apparently landed one at an AD yesterday. He could probably flip it for a substantial profit since its seemingly the only one in the world right now. It's a beautiful watch, but way out of my league.

Imagine the commotion if they ever release a 42mm model.

I'd sell every watch I have to buy a 42 Daytona. And I'd get it brushed.CGSshorty wrote:Imagine the commotion if they ever release a 42mm model.

Re: Daytona demand
Dumb Rolex noob question - what exactly is a Cosmograph ? I didn't think the Daytona had any relationship to space travel.

Seriously?
“Managing expectations is a challenge,” said Mr. Albers, who is considering engraving the purchaser’s names on the back of each watch to discourage buyers only looking to resell for a profit.

Rolex registered the name Cosmograph in 1953, and as has been said, it was used on their Moonphase until 1956. Rolex used the simple "Chronograph" under the name on the standard 2 sub-dial models.
They began using Cosmograph on their three dialed Chronographs ..
They didn't start using the word "Daytona" on any watches until about 1962 when a few were given that additional name to capitalize on the growing hot-rod and especially NASCAR racing that was becoming popular.. In 1966 they were the official time-keeper at the NASCAR Daytona Race. You might say that Daytona was mostly a commemorative designation on the dial.
Cosmograph's can be found both with and without the "Daytona" on the dial all through the 60's and 70's....
After a few years, this simple name (Daytona) became the standard way of referring to the Rolex Cosmograph whether it was a Daytona or not.... so it wasn't until the late 70's or early 80's that Daytona badging started to appear on all Cosmo's.
Therefore, it could be argued that the watch is more correctly a Rolex Cosmograph.

Love the Daytona and would be happy with a pre-owned one...

Last month, when James and the fellas were in town, we did the AD tour of Vancouver. We learned that there is not a Submariner to be found, anywhere in the city or the Province for that matter! Rolex is up to something...

Looking forward to the prices of the 116520's crashing even more. Already they're below $9k for nice used ones.

Thanks. So it appears to be a term that Rolex has invented.jimyritz wrote:==============logan2z wrote:Dumb Rolex noob question - what exactly is a Cosmograph ? I didn't think the Daytona had any relationship to space travel.

On the other hand; the AD I visited last week had quite a few subs, YMs, and the new SD- which is why I was there. They also had a full Tudor line up with the older ETA Pelagos.
