Rolex registered the name Cosmograph in 1953, and as has been said, it was used on their Moonphase until 1956. Rolex used the simple "Chronograph" under the name on the standard 2 sub-dial models.
They began using Cosmograph on their three dialed Chronographs ..
They didn't start using the word "Daytona" on any watches until about 1962 when a few were given that additional name to capitalize on the growing hot-rod and especially NASCAR racing that was becoming popular.. In 1966 they were the official time-keeper at the NASCAR Daytona Race. You might say that Daytona was mostly a commemorative designation on the dial.
Cosmograph's can be found both with and without the "Daytona" on the dial all through the 60's and 70's....
After a few years, this simple name (Daytona) became the standard way of referring to the Rolex Cosmograph whether it was a Daytona or not.... so it wasn't until the late 70's or early 80's that Daytona badging started to appear on all Cosmo's.
Therefore, it could be argued that the watch is more correctly a Rolex Cosmograph.
==========
Love the Daytona and would be happy with a pre-owned one...
Thanks. So it appears to be a term that Rolex has invented.

He will get sued if he does this.
I assume the engraving will void the warranty?
No. Warranty should be fine.
But I don't think a retailer can force a customer to 1) Pay for engraving 2) Significantly decrease the value of the purchased good without their say so.

There seems to be a shortage of some Rolex models in some countries. It seems like any SS sports model is a rarity in the UK. In the US, you can walk into almost any AD and find plenty of them. Rolex works in mysterious ways.

Also, I doubt Rolex would sanction this, and I'm sure he doesn't want to lose his AD status.

It was common practice back in the times of the zenith model.

Very interesting, although I doubt that would fly in this day and age.

Why? If you agree, you get the watch. If you don't agree, you don't get it. There's no right to purchase.

Agree, but its still an intrusion of the AD in a product that its not manufactured by them. Its not the AD business what I do with MY watch. Remember the AD is not Rolex, the AD needs to be in Rolex's good grace, and a social media shitstorm against the AD could ensue. Moreover, I don't think Rolex would allow that. And even if I wanted to keep the watch forever, I would not buy it if an engraving with my name was obligatory.
Any AD will eventually sell all their Daytonas, but they will surely move slower than in other less intrusive AD's.
I bet the AD won't have the balls.

I know ADs who will straight up tell you that you can't get on the list until you spend 10Gs on jewelry and other shit. I think the engraving is totally fine, in that it weeds out flippers almost immediately.

I would not buy one if it had to be engraved. In fact, I'd tell the AD to fuck himself.

They're reasonably easy to get if you're willing to pay the ridiculous mark-up.

It will probably not be as bad as the Daytona has always seemed harder to find at good prices, but it reminds me of how hard it was and how people were gouging prices when the Milgauss first came out. I suppose at some point they will be much easier to get your hands on one especially if Rolex keeps putting out great releases as they have the last several years. (DSSD, SubC, SD4000, Batman etc. etc.) What's the next thing that will create pendemonium? SS Pepsi GMT? SS Skydweller?
Regards
Barry

SS Pepsi will never happen. I think a coke does though.
