Maxi case modifications
Maxi case modifications
Some of you may recall my passion for NATO straps and drilled lugs, while others just think I'm a strange, yet debonair gentleman. Well, I spoke with Edvi @ ABC today and discussed some modifications I am considering for my 114060. Below are some basic prices, shared to give you a reference point in the event you are strange like me. Disclaimer; prices are quotes from today and certainly could change at the desire of ABC. Also, they are not accepting work right now because of a backlog. I was asked to check back in 6-8 weeks to see if incoming watches will be accepted then. Finally, the modifications should take 3-4 weeks, depending on work done and current schedule.
Drill lugs - $500
Slim lugs & add chamfers - $250
Full satin brush or standard refinish - $250
Matte bezel finish - $250
I hope this helps some of you who may be considering the same modifications.

What is the benefits of drilled lugs, quicker strap change?

Sure. Also you can use the 14060 shoulder less spring bars, which work better with nylon straps.patstarrx wrote:What is the benefits of drilled lugs, quicker strap change?

I'm not sure what'd be more interesting, seeing the end result of what could be a really sweet watch or seeing the froth develop from all the butthurt purists?
Re: Maxi case modifications
Slim chamfered lugs sound sexy as hell. That's one I'd consider on any of the new "squared" models

Re: Maxi case modifications
The pricing is not bad at all. I'm guessing they could drill the lugs on any watch too.
Re: Maxi case modifications
Wonder if this is a drill through the existing lug holes? Or you get an additional set?R@cerx wrote:I'm guessing they could drill the lugs on any watch too.

A lot cheaper than I thought. If you're convinced the Sub is a keeper, I'd say do it.

Re: Maxi case modifications
The disadvantage I see for you is you would pay an extra $1250 or so to have the work done and when the time comes to flip it (just being honest here) you will need to sell it for less than an un-altered one because very few others out there will have an interest in the same modifications.
cheers,
Keith

Re: Maxi case modifications
Honestly, I'd skip it. The new SD has thinned the lugs sufficiently, for me, to not look terrible. I'd just buy that.

after all that work, you've still got the glossy dial.
i too would like to see a matte dial no-date, but unless that happens any of these scenarios are a compromise.
best current option=do the lugs and bezel on an sdc.
Re: Maxi case modifications
I might consider it if I had a beater...otherwise, I hope it comes out the way you want--
I wouldn't do it to mine..

I think if you won't get upset that you won't get that money out of it if you tried to sell it them go for it. Personally I wouldn't make the lugs slimmer but I would get a fat chamfer put into them.

Agreed. I also wonder if they could add permanent lug bars too. If so, it would be perfect for those that only would wear it on a nato.toxicavenger wrote:I think if you won't get upset that you won't get that money out of it if you tried to sell it them go for it. Or maybe drilled big enough for some removal able lug bars?R@cerx wrote:Agreed. I also wonder if they could add permanent lug bars too. Re: Maxi case modifications
I wouldn't make a non-reversible mod to the watch. It may sound like a good idea now but I think you'll regret it when you inevitably decide to sell it down the road.
Re: Maxi case modifications
I don't think the pricing is too bad and trust ABC to do something like this. The SDC is a good compromise if the thinned lugs is the most important thing. Though, In my opinion the SDC is not as comfortable of a nato watch due to the deep caseback and the height it adds. On bracelet with the new clasp it seems to mitigate the caseback and height.
Every time I fall for the look of an SD, I remember how it just wasn't as comfortable as a standard sub on a nato. Otherwise the SD (or SDC) is as close as a perfect watch as I have found in every other respect.

Yes, they can do fixed lug bars like the Milsub. It's about $800.R@cerx wrote:Agreed. I also wonder if they could add permanent lug bars too. I'm not 100% on which mods I would make.
