M series purchased in 2009. Sending it to ABC when I get it back from local jeweler who wanted both my arms and legs. So it will be awhile but if I go this route it'll be up for a nice DWC price!

I'm very torn between a sub and an sd. As I've mentioned to a few of my friends, whichever comes up first at the price I'm aiming for, I'm going for it!

Is it just me or have Red Sub prices gone insane the last couple of years (like beard length)? Looking at prices over the past years, they seemed to taken off. I was thinking they'd still be in the 9-11k range but it looks like decent ones lately are more in the 14k range? Could be wrong. If that's the case, I might be out of the market for 1680 Red and in the market for some red paint!
Re: Sourcing a Sub
So, to get this back on track a bit, the dealers already mentioned are good. Also, check out this website for information regarding the minutiae of the different dial types, inserts, hands, cases, etc. They have an entire section devoted to Red Subs, and another with links to vintage dealers (some of whom have already been mentioned here).

One thing to keep in mind is that you're paying for rarity when it comes to a Red Sub, and there's a lot of fakes and frankens out there. Definitely do your research and talk to some knowledgeable folks before you buy. Also, it may just be me, but from a daily wear standpoint, I'd be more comfortable with the 16600. Not that the 1680 will be fragile or anything, just that I'd be more inclined to baby it given its age and cost.

Yes, I think the prices on Rolex vintage have gone up significantly in the past 2 years or so.goaliechris wrote:Is it just me or have Red Sub prices gone insane the last couple of years (like beard length)? That's a great site - I've been reading it a bit and getting dangerously close to being a novice on the subject.JBZ wrote:So, to get this back on track a bit, the dealers already mentioned are good. Thanks for the advice. I'm in the beginning stages and starting to ask that question - will I be comfortable wearing a Red most days given the price and age? Right now my 16600 is that for me and I love it. At some point I may be too worried about babying a 1680. Something to think about for sure. There are probably easier ways to get into vintage Subs than going right for the Red.

Re: Sourcing a Sub
personally I would stick with the SD, great watch and hard to beat if you already own it. birth year stuff is ghey. if anything try to think of something cool that happen when the SD was made and associate it with it. like your first hard-on.

Re: Sourcing a Sub
I too wanted a Red Sub, but I didn't have the cash, and I knew I would be too worried about it. So I bought Matt's 16800 and have been very happy, though I still wonder if I should have gotten a more modern Rolex like a 14060/114060 or 16600 instead of a vintage one (could even have thought about a birthyear then probably). Guess the grass is always greener on the other side.goaliechris wrote:Thanks for the advice. Is a great resource. I think you have missed the boat on the days of the 10k ish DRSD.
If your going vintage i think the "666" transitional Seadweller and the Large plot pre Comex 5513
are going to go up quite significantly from where they are right now.

Re: Sourcing a Sub
I'd buy a 5513/1680 and a snowflake over one Red Sub, purely on the premium they demand. They are super cool though. Another option is to get a nice non-rail 1665, and save yourself a little money.
