Sea Dweller service - ouch
Took my 2009 Sea Dweller in for its first service. I'm the original owner and purchased it from a dealer. It was running about 15 seconds fast so I took it in for service (probably time anyway I thought). Local jeweler sent it to their Rolex service center and here's the damage:
- Overhaul
- new crown and tube
- new mainspring "rotor arbor"
- new reversing wheels
- $1250, 5-6 weeks.
So, I have a few questions. Given the extent of what is needed is that a reasonable cost? He asked if I dropped it given what's needed and of course I'm sure I did sometime in the last 7 years but can't recall anything specific.
Anything else I should be asking or thinking about? First time I have had any damage to a watch and needed this much. 1250 sucks.

Maybe obvious but did you check if it was magnetized

Good question and one I will ask when I call them back. Very possible.
Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
Not fast enough to be magnetized. At least from anecdotal evidence on the forums. I could be all wet.
only accurate watches are interesting
Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
Wow. I got my 2007 Rolex Sea Dweller back from its first RSC service, which included a full overhaul, as well as replacing the mainspring, and it was under $700, Canadian (so, about $500 USD, at the time). I would ask what led to the requirement to replace the points, above?

I've had a watch be running 10-15 seconds fast, checked it with a compass, put it on a demagnetizer, checked again with compass - no deviation and it was no longer running fast. Just from personal experience.marchone wrote:Not fast enough to be magnetized. At least from anecdotal evidence on the forums. I could be all wet.
However, with as much stuff as they're wanting to change out maybe it's something else as well. I'd check regardless.

Holy Eff. I got basically the same treatment for my Omega GMT although it was ~$650ish IIRC. Even though I have the money I opted for a local jeweler who is Omega certified do the overhaul for ~$150. My guy is also Rolex certified. My watch runs great too no problems. Just another option.

Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
Take it somewhere else, you can definitely get it done cheaper.

Seems much too expensive, which suggests "their" Rolex service center is not THE Rolex service center. Get it back and send to RSC NY or Dallas.
If they are sending to Rolex, the local jeweler is marking it up to skim a nice profit off you.

Seems high to me, too, just based on what I've heard. However, I'm not sure what a rotor arbor or reversing wheels are. I'm assuming lubrication and new gaskets are included in the "overhaul." Also, no mention of a pressure test?
Like Ed said, I'd check with an official Rolex service center. Can't hurt to at least get another quote.

Whoa whoa whoa
That's ludicrous
My bro got one of his subs overhauled by RSC and it was around 6-700.
No way it should be over a grand.
I've been using Dominique Wieland, same guy Mike and AJ use. He's done 3 snowflakes and just finished my sub last month.
It was $600. I kept original crystal or it would be about$150 more.

This is a lot more in line with what I would anticipate.BBK357 wrote:My bro got one of his subs overhauled by RSC and it was around 6-700.

Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
You also have more parts replacements than usual, so the price will be higher. Standard service, as everyone has said, is usually around $600-700.
Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
Not entirely true. My Sinn 103 became magnetized and was running 15 sec per day slow. $12.00 fix, thankfully.marchone wrote:Not fast enough to be magnetized. At least from anecdotal evidence on the forums. I could be all wet.

True, but you have to wonder how necessary those replacements are on a relatively new watch.matt.wu wrote:You also have more parts replacements than usual, so the price will be higher. Standard service, as everyone has said, is usually around $600-700.

A magnetized main spring can have all kinds of magnitude. We hear mostly about the ones that were super mag'd.

Dom Wieland will get all of my business, short of a warranty repair. he's done several for me over the last 2 years. highly recommend him.BBK357 wrote:Whoa whoa whoa

New crown/tube on a 09'?? That is crazy. Either way they are skimming the cost of the repair. There are a ton of options way better than that.

Re: Sea Dweller service - ouch
At least here, reverser wheels and rotor arbor are replaced as part of the standard service and included in the cost. Even if they were to be charged separately, they aren't expensive components at all.matt.wu wrote:You also have more parts replacements than usual, so the price will be higher. Crown and tube are normally replaced during every service too, and they aren't particularly costly either.
That seems like an unreasonably high service cost for a 3135 without any out-of-the-ordinary replacement parts.

A watch that runs slow is also magnetized? Thought it was only when a watch is running fastCGSshorty wrote:Not entirely true.
