Re: 10 Things to know about Rolex...
I remember when this article originally appeared (Rolex invited four top watch journos to their factory about a year ago), and the general consensus among them was "holy shit!" When you consider the types of watches these guys routinely cover, that really says something.
Even reigning "Horological High Priest", Ben Clymer – NYT's term, not mine – was impressed. In particular, the "24th century Gatling gun" COMEX-designed pressure tester blew him away:
As much as the Deepsea ain't his bag – homie wears a Milsub, naturally – I got him to admit that it was an insane piece of engineering, nonetheless.
Regards,
Adam
PS - It's worth noting that none of the journalists – Clymer, Dowling, Adams or SJX – were permitted to take pictures; all photos were supplied by Rolex.

Yep, enjoyed re-reading it. Love 'em or not, Rolex does a lot of things extremely well.

Love it-cool company.

Wow, that was painful to read.
It would have been so much better if someone with actual writing skill had covered it instead; what a waste of a good opportunity. Ariel Adams is to journalism as William Hung is to music.

Adam was trying to tell that guy his blue/black DSSD was better than his MilSub.
Re: 10 Things to know about Rolex...
This is 100% true and a very good analogy. Ariel Adams is nearly parody.belligero wrote:Wow, that was painful to read.

Adam, you guys have to make jokes about him when you get together with your Hodinkee buds, right? Right?

lol. I didn't even notice until you pointed it out, but from there on, it was apparent. Great analogy, and 100% true.belligero wrote:Wow, that was painful to read.

I'm neither confirming nor denying any jokes that may or may not have been made.

Ah, nice to see that I'm not the only one who's less than impressed with Ariel "Timepiece Expert" Adams' "I'll-just-make-stuff-up-as-I-go-along" style. I cringe a bit whenever that clueless shill gets published; it's exactly the kind of thing that Jack Forster was talking about in his Forbes article on the sorry state of watch journalism, particularly this bit:
"Virtually every editor-in-chief of every major consumer publication from the lowest to the highest knows very little about watches and watchmaking; individuals who in every other respect are models of intelligent discernment, who wouldn’t dream of approaching wine, or style, or cars, or architecture, from an uninformed perspective, look at watches with a nervous suspicion (often largely justified, it pains me to say) that not only are they themselves not terribly interested in watches, but their readers aren’t either."
You know you're a hack when Jake Ehrlich is no longer the lamest writer in the group after your pudgy ass shows up. But perhaps the comparison is somewhat unfair; Adams does admit he's dealing in endorsements rather than journalism, so it might be too much to apply the comparatively high standards of the online fanzine world in this case.

Adams lost any hope of respectability with that RGM nonsense last year. He's a hack.
