Caseback Removal?

Post by namor » Mon Oct 27, 2014 10:19 am

I bought a "knock-off" set of caseback openers (not genuine Rolex) for the Rolex case design off ebay. Either they are too cheap to be effective, or there's a secret to using this style caseback opener that I'm missing. I have a case holder, and have had no trouble with cases that use the more standard wrench design.

Any opinions on what I'm doing wrong?

What is wrong? Is it slipping or just not coming loose?

The piece just slips without grabbing any of the grooves on the caseback

Sounds like a tool problem to me. Have you tried one of the squishy ball caseback tools?

I did try the squishy ball - again, either I am deficient, or it doesn't work for shit. I tried it on two or three different watches, including a Seiko that I had easily opened with a two prong wrench: nada.

Did Terry ever own the Rolex? If so, it might be a lost cause.

Seriously though, I'd suggest seeing if a Rolex certified watchmaker can break it free for you. It might either be really really stuck, or your caseback tool might be slight too big. It's going to be hard to determine which is true without trying a genuine tool.

Leave it alone. This is the watch gods way of telling you to stay out of there.
