Cool story. The cynic in me has long thought the reason Rolex doesn't provide information on vintage pieces makes me think they kept sloppy or incomplete records in the past. Especially as they had many outside suppliers they no longer do.
It's no small feat it also helps perpetuate the legend.

Dom Wieland has told me I would be surprised by the variances that left the factory in the old days. This is gorgeous, by the way.

I agree. They it seems they definitely had a "buy in bulk, and use until it's gone" mentality back then. They clearly didn't care about minute font differences and things like that.marchone wrote:Cool story. The watch is hot regardless of authenticity. Fantastic discussion/debate about this over on VRF.
Those guys are insanely conversant with even the most obscure of idiosyncrasies when it comes to vintage Rolex.

Vintage Rolex is crazy, and objectively much of it is pretty dumb IMO.

Yes, I have been both highly intrigued and also completely turned off by the whole vintage Rolex spectacle.
A birth year 6263 black dial, however, is my be-all, end-all watch. Please don't ever let me hit the lotto.

And because of this, you have to be really careful about what you buy. It would suck, for example, to buy a serif dial 5513 only to find out later that Rolex didn't release serif dials during the year of your watch. All of these minute details is where the value lies.dukerules wrote:Vintage Rolex is crazy, and objectively much of it is pretty dumb IMO.
