Sea Dweller, Sub LV Conundrum
At first I was thinking I wanted a Sea Dweller (the old one), but then I started thinking about the LV. In favor of the dweller is the larger size, greater depth rating, less seen in the wild and lack of a cyclops. In favor of the LV is 2 bezel choices and maxi dial.
I'd have to buy the SD used, but I can get a brand new LV for $5000.
The two are really pretty similar, and if I got the LV, would I really care about the thinner case and cyclops, or would I just get used to them?
Advice?

i wouldnt mind a used LV, just because your folks are buying it doesnt mean you shouldnt shop around. Id go for the used LV unless you can find a steal price on a SD. The LV's maxi dial and green bezel are too cool.
kinda hard to lose, since theyre both perfect watches.

My feeling is that both are very cool watches but for that kind of money, I don't want to have to get use to it; I should love it...
You can't go wrong....Can't wait to see what you choose...

You must be talking about the DeepSea SeaDweller since they don't make the regular anymore? Seadweller of the past was 40 mm like the sub just a hair thicker. The deepsea is a whole other monster!

Not the Dipsy Dweller, the old one. I edited my first post to clear that up.cali kid wrote:You must be talking about the DeepSea SeaDweller since they don't make the regular anymore? Seadweller of the past was 40 mm like the sub just a hair thicker. The deepsea is a whole other monster!
Because the old one is not in most ADs, I'd have to get it used. The LV would be new from AD.

I love that deep sea, think I could be a one watch guy with that watch!

Re: Sea Dweller, Sub LV Conundrum
I've looked at both, got the LV and as time pasted the green bezel was nice. but it can and will wear on you...
the SD is just a sweet beast! actually looks and seems bigger on your wrist than the LV. the HRV is cool but you'll never use it. but it is the bull's nutsack!
but for now, with the black bezel, I'm just really digging the black Sub and the Maxi-Dial...
maybe one day I'll look to trade it for a SD.
but right now, I'm happier than a 2 dicked dog.

Echoing thoughts above, I don't think you can go wrong with either. I'm a SD guy, but I can totally see the appeal in the Maxi dial and ability to switch to the black bezel.
Re: Sea Dweller, Sub LV Conundrum
If you can snag a BNIB LV for $5k from an AD, that's a hell of a deal. I'd do it.
Between the two, the LV will wear more like your current Omegas - that is, more comfortably as a long-term daily wearer. Not to take anything away from the SD, which is also very comfortable, but with it's slightly greater weight and taller height, the nod goes to the LV for long term wear comfort.
If it's a choice between those two and it's a wash to you personally, I'd take the LV first and the SD later. Two reasons: 1) the LV is BNIB from an AD. Warranty for two years, unmolested to mark an occasion (are you getting this for a specific reason? graduation?), and somewhere to take your watch for minor things like bezel swaps, etc... 2) the LV is going to be harder to acquire down the road. Yeah, the difference is going to be marginal because both were produced in MASS quantities. However, the LV was produced in mass quantities for 7 years. The SD for over 30 (in it's current exact form - minus lug holes and lume type).
Put it this way, I love the SD. LOVE it. But I think if I were to have the choice between the two now at comparable prices, I'd take the LV for certain.

The Wu did make some good points. I think I'll be able to go try them both on again thursday.

Re: Sea Dweller, Sub LV Conundrum
That's a tough call. I wouldn't be able to rush into that one. Prolly, I'd end up with the SD, but I'm not sure.
QUESTION: Can one swap the LV's bezel 3-4 times a day for the rest of your life with no ill side effects? (or say ~weekly, more realistically)

1200m and no cyclops. Whatever that one is.
That green bezel is sick though. That's what made me get the green bezel fory Stowa Seatime.

For those who want the "ultimate" dive watch, the SD is definitely the easy choice between the two. That not a consideration, it's definitely a choice you can't rush.vbuskirk wrote:That's a tough call. I wouldn't be able to rush into that one. Prolly, I'd end up with the SD, but I'm not sure.

About the bezel insert swapping - I've not heard, even once, of it ever being a problem as long as you're doing it right (not bending the insert when you pop it out).

I'm just thinking - this is such a wonderful conundrum to have.

Re: Sea Dweller, Sub LV Conundrum
It's a Sub. Or a version thereof. There are subtle differences with the regular Sub. And there again, there are subtle differences between the Sub and the Sea Dweller (a.k.a. SD). For example, [lack of] a cyclops magnifier over the date.SCM64 wrote: Thank you! I can't follow all this Rolex code speak.
Quote from http://www.rolexreferencepage.com/2.html
* Notice above that we have another testimony to how the LV's shocking green bezel can stand out a smidge too much sometimes. Then again, if you had both the aftermarket black version of the bezel, as well as the standard equipment green version, and you could swap them with impunity...The Submariner 16610 LV, or "Lunette Verde" was issued in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Submariner, arguably the greatest diver watch ever created, and certainly the most famous. While initially thought to be a limited edition model, the LV Submariner has remained in production since its introduction. There are only cosmetic differences between the LV Submariner, and the regular black bezel counterpart - the bezel color, markers, and hands are the only difference. The LV Submariner uses the Rolex "Maxi Dial" large size hands and markers, first introduced on the Yacht-Master. I purchased my LV Submariner in the Summer of 2005 and sold it a short time thereafter. While it was a fantastic watch to wear casually, I never thought the green bezel looked good with a suit, which I wear daily.
