Exp II or Sub?
Exp II or Sub?
Hey everyone, I've been thinking about moving my Panerai and newly acquired THC for a Rolex. I'm torn on which one though. I like the Exp II black dial because it works in every situation and it's a little different. It doesn't have the clasp like the sub, no rotating bezel, maybe some other things I'm missing.
I'm also thinking about a Sub. I think it speaks for itself. Its a classic bad ass watch. It's also easily worn in every situation. But they are everywhere. It seems to be the watch that you get when you "make it". Am I just trying to justify?
I'm curious about your thoughts, experiences with one or both.

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Interested to see how this thread goes as I've also been mulling around the idea of shooting for an explorer II but it would cost me both Tudors. That said the Sub is my never sell watch. It is a little popular but for me it just may be the perfect watch. It wears more like a 41 or 42mm piece and the glide lock clasp is a work of art. The 20mm lugs insure that you won't have any trouble with straps and the ceramic bezel is rock solid. You know with the Sub that 30 years from now it's going to be just as much a classic as it is now.

While I like having a bezel to time stuff, I think I'd go EXP II. It's just a cool watch

If I were a one-watch guy, it would be both of them.
But that's just me.

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Between Sub ND or ExpII black dial... I would go Sub ND.
Now if we were taking about a white dial ExpII...

The ND Sub is a very nice watch which is both classic and modern. I really doubt that the ND version is anywhere near as ubiquitous as you suggest. I like the design far more than either of the upsized Explorer 2s - Rolex took the "maxi" a little too far on those watches IMO.

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Id go with the sub. I don't like the ExpII in black as much. Sub is great as a one watch.
But I'd not sacrifice the Pam and THC for it. Maybe wait and get a sub later.

Sub for me all day long.
Re: Exp II or Sub?
Own them both and its tough decision. I have the white exp2 GMT. I'd say daily wearer the sub, overall coolness the exp.
Re: Exp II or Sub?
Get both but white dial EXPII.

The 114060 is similar to having the perfect reed. When it became time to purchase another Rolex, it was between the 214270 and Exp II (white). I love the Explorer II, but it lost again. l preferred the no date watch and size (only a personal preference). You must try them both on!

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Exp II if you decide to go with white. I'm in love with that thing.
Re: Exp II or Sub?
You're inclination is exposed here. If it's a first Rolex, the Sub is where it begins. Go for an EXPII now and you'll forever wonder about your choice.Sniper13 wrote:I'm also thinking about a Sub. I think it speaks for itself. Its a classic bad ass watch.
Either's retained value makes it a liquid asset. I'd buy Matt's 114060. It's a great price.
only accurate watches are interesting
Re: Exp II or Sub?
I got mine from matt, no regrets, perfect watch every situation..
Re: Exp II or Sub?
Sub is popular for a reason. If you have the chance to get one, I think you should go for it.
Trust me, skip the sub and you'll forever be thinking about it.
At the very least, if you don't like the sub, you can flip it for the same price or for a small profit. Not true for the exp - tho it IS a fine watch too.

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Having owned both the Sub-C and the Exp-2 I would go with the Sub. I sold my Sub-C to fund the Explorer and while I like white dials, the size of the Exp was really the only thing I liked better. The Sub is classic, plus the clasp is killer. I'd like another please.
Re: Exp II or Sub?
Tough call. I've owned both (white dial) and would do the sub. The two attributes that take the Sub across the finish line first is the clasp and the bezel. I find the finish of the Sub to add an element of dimension and intrigue that isnt found on the exp2. I do like the orange accent of the exp2, but dont feel it overcomes the Sub.
Re: Exp II or Sub?
Sub (date or no date depending on your preference). No doubt, end of story.
Wu's selling a ND at a terrific price right now.

Re: Exp II or Sub?
Had both and the Sub-C won out easily for me. Glide lock is super useful as is the timing bezel.
Looks great on a NATO too.

Was in the same boat & went with with the subC
The only thing I wish I did differently was letting go of the Pam for it. It's a good thing to have one of those in your collection as well.
