I'm waiting for the dark hole with a headlamp to represent the Explorer II

Yes, Crisp blue "UPHILL" text on the dial.

Better on the wrist, IMO. Photo from Hodinkee.

Now it's 5 lines of information, all in different fonts and 2 colors, well done

Tough crowd. I don't see what is so egregiously bad about it. It's a DSSD with a colorful dial variant. It's only my opinion but I find it tastefully done. I don't recall a similar reaction to the LV or Milgauss variants. I would however, question the 30% price bump for it over the standard offering.

IMVHO this doesn't come anywhere near the real abominations I consider to be which are the two-tone and diamond chip encrusted models.

Now, if they made the dial from something Cameron dragged back from the depths of the Mariana Trench ...

... like a rare mineral or the shell of a nearly extinct exoskeletal creature ...

... that would be something akin to an MK move.

Wait, it's 30% higher? Haha haha haha haha
Well I guess it's better than making the watch out of marbled plastic and charging 30% more.

Yes, it's better, but still not attractive to me. If they simply made the entire dial the blue of the top half, without the green writing, I'd think it was ok.

Much more subtle in the flesh but still a no go and the 30% price hike, yikes.

I actually like the midnight blue at the center of the dial. Had they made the dial all that color, I would have liked it. Even with the weird green text. It would have been much less hokey that way. Had they done the bezel in a matching blue it would have been a worthwhile effort.

I agree a little bit with David: I think it's genius.

From a revenue perspective it's a total win: paint a dial differently and increase revenue off of an existing infrastructure by almost 1/3? That's an easy day right there.

Is it ugly? Hell yes. That dial's as wrong as two boys in bed lickin' ass but it's going to make 'em money. People are still going to buy it, especially if it's a limited edition. And Rolex - or any company for that matter - doesn't give two shits about the watches long-term valuation: they just want the sale on their books.

For Rolex, you might be correct. However, that is absolutely not the case with Patek. They clearly want their watches to hold value long term. If not, they wouldn't blow up auction values by outbidding everyone at the hugely watched auctions.

I agree with this, but the two tone dial, green lettering (and, yes, I know it's supposed to represent the color of the submersible), and multiple fonts make it look really messy to me. I'd want to see it live, but the two pictures I've seen make the transition from blue to black look pretty amateurish.

That said, I'm sure there are some folks who will buy it just because it's different; because it celebrates Cameron's achievement; because it's expensive; etc. Some will also buy it because they genuinely like it - doesn't mean they have bad taste - just different from mine. As was mentioned, Rolex has obviously released some pieces that are a lot more garish than this one.

It's growing on me slowly but I do agree it feels a bit gimmicky. Would have been better if there was at least something more innovative functionally about it. Having said that, the collaboration with the expedition & Cameron reminds me of the old Nat Geo ads and is the stuff that really got me interested in Rolex - maybe this watch will do that for others.
