Speedmaster + $2300.00 for a mint 16750 GMT?

Post by john wilson » Fri Jan 10, 2014 4:25 pm

My speedmaster 3572.50 (Hesalite crystal-sapphire back). Box and papers.
GMT 16750 blue and red bezal. No box but all Rolex service papers. I really like the GMT but also my Speedmaster....
I told him Id stop by his shop Monday...I'll think about it over the weekend.
Would love some input.

Would need more pics of the 16750. Matte and original?

What's the flip value of ur speedie? 3K? So add the 2300 - 5300-5500 for the GMT. I'd say a bit high.. Is there a warranty involved?

Also, what's up with that bracelet? Original and correct? Doesn't look right in that pic

That's a late model gloss 16750. IMO no. But if you want to sell the speedy I would love a 3572 ;).

I generally prefer Omega, but if you already have multiple Speedy's then I'd make the deal.

Matte or gloss? Matte is worth a lot more IMO.

Would help to know the trade value of the Speedy. This is just anecdotal, but it seems like GMT's get frankened a lot. Just judging by the HQ Milton website, the prices are all over the place depending on year, dial type, and replacement parts.

Assuming there are no authenticity issues, I think it's a pretty good deal based on what I've seen. Like others have said, hard to tell from that picture, though, and I'm no expert.

The picture shows a redial GMT w/the white gold surrounds...At least you would get a watch you could read in the dark. :-)

The web,
Two different variants of the dial:
Matt, without white gold indexes - rare.
Glossy, with white gold indexes (identical to the newer GMTs). Rolex switched the dial during production (approx. serial 9XXXXXX / 1986). This dial was first introduced without 'Date'-imprint, later versions show this imprint. During service, many matt dials got replaced by glossy ones.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal, plus you don't have the hassle of selling your speedy online.

No doubt that there were numerous versions of the dial, John. My point was that the "SWISS" at the bottom of the GMT pictured indicates a more recent service redial, and Luminova or SuperLuminova for the glow fuel and not tritium (would be indicated with the "Swiss T<25" at the bottom of the dial). IIRC Rolex changed to Luminova around 1998 on most dials.

Nice looking GMT. I've admired them for a long time. FWIW I'd search for an example that has a matte dial. The Gloss dial is nice, but doesn't have that vintage look to it IMO. Good luck with your decision.
