I finally get it
Before I really started caring about watches (about 3 years ago), my daily wearer was an Invicta 8926 (yes, I know ) that I bought off Amazon for $70. Up until then, I had worn it for 3-4 years and I didn't care that it was an Invicta or a shameless clone of a Rolex Sub. I wore it because it was cheap and automatic.
As I got deeper and deeper into this "hobby" I found myself looking for anything but a Rolex, particularly the Sub. Honestly, I think I thought of the Sub as a watch for the mindless masses and too predictable. I tried a lot of micros, Sinns, UTS, Omegas, an IWC, a JLC, some Stowas, a Kobold, etc. and none of them stuck. To scratch that itch I was willing to try anything but Rolex.
Well, I'm not really sure if a switch was flipped, if I wore down gradually or if I was tiring of the constant buying and selling but I started to give some serious thought to trying to narrow it down to one daily wearer again. None of the ones in the stable fit the bill so I really started to give some thought to Rolex due to the history, etc. but especially due its versatility.
This past Saturday morning, the family and I just happened to be walking around a local shopping center that just happened to have a Rolex AD. I tried on the Sub C and I cannot tell you how close I was to buying it then. I decided though that I'd give it some thought overnight.
We get back home Saturday, I check DWC and lo and behold mbakes has thoughts of selling his 16610. Well, it arrived today and I can tell you that the itch has been scratched.
You've seen this watch a thousand times but here it is again - the clone of the Invicta 8926, crappy pics and all:

Re: I finally get it
The objection of ubiquity is weak when it comes to watches. What you've got is a classic, clearly an achievement, so much so that it's entry into common knowledge or pop culture is really just a reaffirmation; at some point in the past only seasoned watch aficionados "got it." Iconoclastic peddlers to novelty or horological snobs in this hobby may scoff but that just reveals their inner crisis of identity.
Other words, damn nice watch!

I bought a cheap watch from a crazy man
Floating down canal
It doesn't use numbers or moving hands
It always just says now
Now you may be thinking that I was had
But this watch is never wrong

Re: I finally get it
I went through the same thought process before arriving at Rolex for the first time.
Then I dabbled in some of the other watches that I'm supposed to love if I'm an enlightened WIS....
And you know where I am today...

Re: I finally get it
I think there comes a period in the development of most WIS where the realization occurs that the Rolex Sub, despite its ubiquity, is just pretty damn awesome. Congrats!
Re: I finally get it
I had a similar journey to my first Sub and mine is here to stay. Congrats!
