IRREANTUM MAGELLAN

Post by davidwhitford » Mon Oct 18, 2010 7:31 pm

:excited: Image

Irreantum means "of many waters", that being said Magellan (the watch) is the name sake of Ferdinand Magellan. He was a late 15th Century/early 16th Century Portuguese explorar who was the first to circumnavigate the globe. In addition, landed and ported on Guam where we celebrate his discovery of the island.

There is resemblance to vintage Jenny/DOXA divers. Note the teeth on the outer bezel, the case itself and the mix of rice bead and standard links used on its bracelet.

Specifications:

Case: 316 stainless steel
Dimensions: 45mm x 13.6mm / 22mm lugs
Movement: Swiss Auto ETA 2824-2
Glass: Sapphire Crystal
Lume: Swiss SuperLumiNova
Water-resistance: 500m

While I'm sure many Doxa fans are screaming "Copycat!", the Magellan isn't really a copy of Doxa's watches but more a copy of the style of watches from the 60's that Doxa has continued to produce to this day. Magellan's watches are offered at a much lower pricepoint, and probably uses cases constructed more affordably. The dials are quite nice, and they are available in a few different colors, all of which you can check out on their website: http://www.irreantumwatch.com/.

Although I am a big fan of DOXA and own nine of thier watches, who says Doxa's are unique? The new watch company based in Maine, USA, has already hit the streets after some delays. The full price of the watch is $545.

MAGELLAN did discover Guam and seems appropriate for a watch buyer in Guam.

Got mine on an Orange Silicone Sport Strap.

I have no proof, but I suspect the cases on the Magellan are made in the same Chinese factory as the cases on DOXAs. If it has an ETA in it, then it doesn't sound all that bad. However ... I hate the dial. Maybe if I had never seen a DOXA dial I might like it a little, but as it stands now I don't.

Also, I have to disagree somewhat with your opinion that it is not a copycat of DOXA, but a continuation of a style of 60's and 70's diver. Without the BOR bracelet and DOXA tooth bezel ... maybe. But it looks like all they did was move the crown, slap on a different dial, and voila ... MAGELLAN. It's no big deal really. I've gotten numb to all the homage watches out there, so if you like it then go for it. I've seen worse. [read INVICTA].

:naughty: Hate the dial - how about dislike the dial! Hate is a strong word and we have enough of that in the world. However, you are entitled to your opinion and tastes. How about a cajun dial with lots of seasoning. Dave@Guam

Not sure on this one. I do like the look of the watch but I am not sure that design of dial goes with the case style. But it is a good looking watch. So congrats Dave and post up some wrist shots!

I don't dislike the dial...well maybe I dislike the carbon fiber . I am not fond of the lume dots/hour markers however. I do wonder if it would look better in person though.
