My buddy John and I are attending the local Rolex / Tudor preview on Wednesday, so I’ll check this sucker out. I really don’t understand the crown design, other than that they wanted to be different. The “guts” of the crown are basically like the other Rolex stuff.

It comes from the historic 7924 "Big Crown" model.

As per why the model, new in '58, was like that, I can only speculate that it may have been intended to be easier to operate with gloves on, but that's just a guess.

Yes, but that watch used a Rolex big crown, not a goofy one with an aluminum sleeve. ;)

I like quirky watches lol, like the pushers on the SBGC001/201.

I don't think the BB58 has the aluminum sleeve, I think I read that it's a plain steel stem.

That seems to be true, and the '58, not coincidentally, is named after the year of the first Big Crown model, so perhaps that's intentional.

Faux rivets kill these for me.

That's why I'd get it on the fabric strap. More affordable as well.

58 on bracelet for me, absolutely love it. I would change the crown (as mentioned) to just screw all the way, but its not an issue for me. That size, from brand with a lot of history and with an inhouse movement with a great power reserve... it's a steal.

I bet they do a blue dial in the next year or two.

And yes, when they eventually make a gmt in the 58 case, I will also have to get one.

The 41mm version fits the earlier not riveted bracelet.

I probably would make an exception for the bracelet if this happened. Or make it a dedicated nato watch.

If anything it'll be blue bezel and black dial like BBB
Honestly I liked my BB Noir with the gilt and all that.

It could see them remaking the BB blue, but that blue snowflake is just sitting there begging to get remade. The funky blue Pelagos doesn’t count.

The 41mm BB Black is less “gilt” than the 58 due to the silver insert. I like that design better.

Very true, keep forgetting that 58's bezel is also gilt

I love the blue Pelagos, but yeah, a blue Black Bay 58 homage to the original Snowflake models would be awesome.

Oh hell, after thinking about this, I think I'm going to need that 58 at some point. It really is everything I've wanted in a throwback Sub-perfect size, gilt everywhere, red triangle on the bezel, and chamfers. I'll overlook the crown issue. Someday, someone is going to release aftermarket mercedes hands for these, and that will make this even better.

I've always wanted one of these (and don't have Smellody money for one ):

And an "official" Rolex-ish homage to this is about as good as it's ever going to get for most of us:
Image

The Tempus Machina guys actually did a really nice homage to these recently, but the BB58 seems a bit purer to me, not to mention about an eighth of the price:

That vintage Rolex looks much better. Primarily due to the lack of gold on the insert.

I still really like the 58. It makes the ceramic sub look bloated in comparison.
