Round #13: Case Backs (MM > U1)

Post by vbuskirk » Sun Jul 11, 2010 7:03 pm

In retrospect, having two separate rounds for (a) "cases" and (b) "case backs" probably wasn't a great idea. I should have just posted one round and scored it a tie. Here are some of the tradeoffs across these two watches.

========
- MM: one-piece design is quite unique
- U1: servicable by most any competent watchmaker
- MM: one-piece design is part of Seiko dive history
- U1: absurd water resistance numbers that blow MM out of the water
- MM: Seiko wave logo, but parts of caseback are discolored from use
- U1: kewl stampled/chiseled 'U1' logo & nice rounded shape (for strength)
- MM: disappears: very comfortable
- U1: doesn't disappear. and yet in a good way; impressive wrist presence
- U1: short, curved lugs for quite manageable 44mm watch
- MM: nice mix of brushed & polished finishes
- U1: bead blasted for unique color
- MM: versatile with many different looks, including a very nice, shiny, 'dressy' diver look on bracelet
- U1: tough submarine steel (the watch in these pictures is old! and not pampered as far as I can tell)

Another winner, Chris!!

I love the U1 - period.

Oh, here is U1 German U-boat steel on an American U-boat..

Sorry about the thread jack, when you said U-boat it reminded me of some pics I took a couple of years ago. I should take some updated shots on my next trip. Time is running out!
