Round #11: The Cases (U1 > MM)
First of all, let me say that this round ("cases") and the next ("case backs") will combine to make a tie. On the one hand, I like the idea of the one-piece caseback design of the Seiko. On the other hand, I prefer living with the Sinn.
So, okay. "Cases" If we consider only overall shape of the Seiko case, I'd say it is somewhat derivative. On the plus side, it is extremely comfortable (e.g. see the section on natos/zulus). It does sit a little higher (15.2mm) than the flat, canteen like design of the Sinn (14.5mm). All in all, the Seiko is very well executed, but the Sinn is just badass. You know it is there, and it makes your weenie wiggle a little when you think about it.

Interesting. The monocoupe case doesn't get it serious points? I think SUG does a terrific job, seriously. But that Seiko case is just

Robert, have you been drinking? Cause I thought we covered that.

Case is the highlight of the MM for me. U1 is solid too though.

Re: Round #11: The Cases (U1 > MM)
I will admit to some surprise here, simply because the Seiko case is pretty unique. However, the Sinn not only has a sexy case itself, we need to remember the use of the German Sub steel used by Sinn. To me that is a very smart, and functional design decision, and then to go execute it and promote it as they have is the kind of tech message I appreciate.
Close round here, and both companies show off some innovation. Cheers to both watches.

I never liked the color of the Sinn case-the darker grey color. I prefer a more brilliant silver metal color. Total personal preferance. I think however using sub steel is very unique, cool, and genius.

Thanks for helping out guys!!! In my haste, I'm missing lots of things I meant to say.
As for the color of the Sinn. This watch saved me four thousand dollars. I get the look of the IWC Titanium in an affordable diver that still has some heft to it.

German Submarine Steel..... 'nuff said..
I normally prefer my stainless to be brighter too, but in this one watch (maybe others some day), I like the fact that the steel is darker and duller than my other watches. It makes it appear tougher... and badder. And if I believe what those Germans are telling me (and I do), it really is.moishlashen wrote:I never liked the color of the Sinn case-the darker grey color. The sub steel looks cool but it being stronger I call . Just like Rolex and there super anti-corrosive steel.

You can't argue with the weenie wiggle factor Derek.
Okay, okay. Let me find my lightbox. I was waiting for a sunset to take nice pics of the MM caseback, but let's see if I can get something decent captured in a lightbox, and then I'll post up the next round on "case backs", which will be given to Seiko...

I'm sure the U1 would make my weenie wiggle if I saw one in person.

Re: Round #11: The Cases (U1 > MM)
I used "tough" as a description of its appearance, not as an opinion of the steel's strength attributes. The added comment on the Germans refered to Sinn's touting of their own product and was meant as humor.toxicavenger wrote:The sub steel looks cool but it being stronger I call . However, a while back I read a thread in WUS. The OP was a metalurgist(sp?) and he was explaining the differences in the alloys of several different stainless steels. It was facinating reading, and it supported the actuality that some stainless steels are better than others for the purpose of watch cases, bracelets, etc. I am prepared to believe that Sinn and Rolex too, use a better steel than many of the others out there.
Interesting tho...
I think ir would be cool to see one of thes German submarines which use this steel brought upafter a few years of service, and examined in comparison to other subs using other "normal(?)" steel with similar service histories, to see the longer term effects of the salt water on them.
This could make or break Sinn's rather boastfull description of this steel's salt water corrosion resistance performance.

The post about the Sub Steel properties is posted here somewhere. When I am off the iPhone and back on the computer I will search for it. The Sub Steel was also less magnetic than others steels. I'll try to find it, it was quite interesting.

Found the two I was thinking about.
Here are two must read threads for anyone interested in Sinn metals.

Pretty sure you could build a sub out of Seiko steel too
