That's a really good review. I like the looks of the Vortex, but those long lugs scare me. I have a 7" wrist too, so maybe I need to check it out a little closer. I gotta say, the finish is impeccable.

7.25 here David and the lugs are my concern also.

I think on a cool Nato/Zulu it would be right at home.

Well, I was going to post these elsewhere. But the whining  about lug length necessitated an early intervention. Assuming the lugs are similar on the Vortex, your relatively ape-like paws should be fine with it (compared to my more humanly proportioned 6.5" wrists).
The new thick leather ammo strap aids in conforming the lugs to the wrist ( Paolo18 happens to have some ammos on sale now, too).

Jay's right. The specs say 54mm lug to lug (the two cases really are identical), but it sure doesn't seem like it. To me, the watch wear a little small overall, and the lug to lug distance isn't even close to being an issue on my 7" wrist.

Thanks for the SMG-1 pics. Damn, that's a really good looking (albeit overpriced) watch, and it looks great on that strap, too.

Thanks, though if I didn't own this one, I'd have picked up the Vortex in a heartbeat.

great review... everything is spot on. It's refreshing for me to get a non date watch. Also, it has gotten me interested in Kobold also.
I do like the hands on the SMG better tho.

I was lucky enough to score #4. I contemplated buying the titanium bracelet from Kobold, but at $1,050 I just didn't feel right spending more money on the bracelet than I did the watch itself...

One of the better reviews ive read. great photo comparison shots.

Looks like a great watch. i to like the pilot/diver combo.

That being said, i to would purchase it. Getting that "kobold look"
without that kobold price
