RIP, Eddie Van Halen

Post by dukerules » Tue Oct 06, 2020 1:00 pm

Dead at 65. My first favorite band was Van Halen. 1984 was the first album (cassette) I ever bought. A buddy and I in fifth grade used to graffiti those “VH” signs everywhere.  RIP, EVH.

Wow, me too on first cassette bought (I actually bought 1984 and one other). I don’t listen to Van Halen any more but sure did back then.

I’m shocked that DLR outlived him.

I was trying to explain this to my 14 yo. I said, “imagine if Drake died. That’s basically what this means to anyone who came of age in the 1980s”

RIP EVH.

What a shocker. He was a rock icon. VH was such a part of my high school and college years. Friends of mine won the very first MTV basement tapes and opened for VH for their entire North America tour.

I saw him with Roth live a bit over 30 years ago. Always been a huge fan of great rock guitarists (Satriani, Vai, Howe, Goven, Beck, Macalpine, Moore, Hendrix, and many more). Eddie was so fast, so clean, and had so much style it was a life experience to see live (which was a lot different than his studio stuff).

RIP

Saw VH live in 78 incredible........... EVH was a genius. It's hard to convey how radical a change his guitar sound (the Brown sound) and technique were in the late 70's. He was as influential as Hendrix or Jeff Beck. Maybe more so. Sad sad sad.......

A friend of mine posted in his FB late that he was a headliner at our small town, Lake Butler, FL, back in 1986. I started researching and found out that his mother has Indonesian. I didn’t know that.
It's a beautiful world! Gerald.

As a friend who opened for them on two tours said of Eddie. He was confident, shy and had an incredible work ethic. He also was a huge influence on all rock guitarists that followed in his footsteps.

His dad was Dutch classical musician and he was born in the Netherlands. They immigrated to California when he was 7 allegedly to escape the racism that his Indonesian mother received in Amsterdam. Interesting stuff.

I remember the cig in the guitar strings, and this dual neck guitar pic looked familiar for some reason.
