2021 - DEFENDER or BRONCO

Post by deepcdvr » Fri Jan 10, 2020 7:43 pm

Going to need a mid-large SUV next year and have been holding out for the cheaper version of the Defender, but then BRONCO decides to come out in the same year...

Thoughts?

I saw a shitty looking Blazer the other day. It looked like like a chick ride.

Any thought on picking up a 4Runner? Given you already have the Tacoma, you’ll be familiar with pretty much all the features of the 4Runner. Depending on the year of the Taco, the engines might be the same as well.

While I like the looks of both your options, you know the Yoda will be more reliable than either of them.

My last 4 or 5 vehicles have been Toyota trucks and SUV’s. I owned multiple 4Runners and a newer Tacoma before my current LC. They are all great vehicles, but the 4Runner is more roomy inside than the Tacoma. That being said, a 2006-07 Tundra with a camper shell over the bed would be an awesome setup, in my opinion.

Yes yes - my original inclination was to grab a 4Runner and I may still do that, but although the Taco is an awesome (albeit small) truck that has everything I need, I am very disappointed in the transmission on the 6 cyl. It’s a bit of a dog and seems to always be searching for gears. I also own a 2015 explorer with a 6 cyl engine and it’s a dream to drive... powerful and very smooth.

I would not be happy if I dropped 45K on the 4Runner and had mediocre engine performance....

I suspect the Land Rover - even the reportedly less expensive version - will be out of my price range... (I’m not Zach) but if the artist renderings of the Bronco are accurate and the engine is adequate, I figure they will give the Toyota a run for its money

Yeah there are two wranglers in my compound and although I thought I would love the look, I still think they are ugly as hell (apologies to those that dropped 50k on one, just my opinion)

Didn’t know they were bringing hummers back lol

I drive to DC quite a bit now and have to deal with traffic and tight underground parking which is why I sold my beloved Titan and downsized to the much more nimble Tacoma. I would bet the Hummer would need an eight point turn to get out of its own way

The entire Toyota SUV and midsize truck line is grossly underpowered with the V6. They all need to be powered by a Turbo or SC, or moved to a V8. Just my $0.02...

The newer Tacoma is powered by the new 3.7 V6 with (I think) a 9 speed auto trans. Your perception that it seems to always be hunting for the right gear and is underpowered is shared by other owners from what I’ve read on various Tacoma owners forums.

There are trans reprogramming options you can do to improve the performance, but the general consensus is Toyota made a mistake in putting a car-tuned engine in the Taco rather than a truck-tuned engine.

The current 4Runner has the old 4 liter V6. This is the engine in the older Tacoma’s. While less powerful on paper, most users prefer the power delivery and torque curve for a truck.

There are several YouTube vids out there of people building “Tacundra’s” by dropping the Tundra engine and trans into a Taco.

I used to own one of those smaller Tunda’s with the 4.7 V8 from Lexus. That was a nice truck.

When the Tundra got super sized, I moved down to the Taco as I have no need for a full sized truck.

If Toyota brought their little diesel to the States in the Taco, I’d have $$$ in hand to buy one.

Yeah- a few of us here had the pleasure of driving the Hilux diesels overseas- amazing trucks. But my favorite was the 100 series LC’s with the diesel. Man, that thing would fly!!

i have a pretty strong no-go to the first year of any new style. let the bleeding edge people work out the kinks. buy the second year after they've found/fixed them.

Diesel Wrangler Rubicon with sliding roof hardtop - FTW (just bring money).

I like the 4-Runner but found it lacking basic comforts like push button start and CarPlay, at least back when I looked last year.
