Funny this thread popped up as I’ve been spending less and less time looking at watches and more and more time drooling over bikes. After a 6 year hiatus I just picked up a Giant Trance 29 and am having a blast! Actually headed to the lake tomorrow to demo a few from the local bike shop for some fun.

Feels good to get off the couch and exercise a bit.

Kinda what I have read. The Jamis has enough room to upgrade to 27.5 though. So in the future an upgrade is possible.

Nice!

I'm renting a Giant Stance today for a couple days. Supposed to be a great bike for the price.

I work part-time wrenching bikes at a local store and would tell you to avoid 26 at all costs—it’s not even worth it for shops to stock the tires. If you can find one, I would look for a hard tail 27.5 plus. The fatter tires would be a bit smoother without the complication and weight of FS (just because of your locale). Also, keep in mind if buying used suspension that if they aren’t well maintained they wear fast. And we get $240 for overhaul of front/rear suspension—should be done every season (manufacturers recommend every 50 hours, which is akin to recommended watch servicing). You should keep that in mind when looking.

I have a 29+ hard tail and love it, but it would take getting used to if you are used to light and nimble.

Get the tire pressure right and you can drive over a lot, which is usually a good match with my limited skills.

Went riding for the past two days on the rental Giant Stance. Yesterday on mostly flat double tracks. Today was a single track along a creek bed and then the return along a flat single track. The creekside was a little up and down with a lot of roots.

Only a couple falls. Can you say endo? At slow speed? Is this how you are supposed to park a bike?

As for for the full suspension bike, I'm not sure I liked it enough to spend the extra cash on one. Maybe I'm just not used to the bouncy ride. Plus the have a medium frame. I like a little bigger cockpit usually.

So I'm still thinking hardtail. Those deals on the Jamis 26ers are hard to pass. I can always upgrade to 27.5+ if needed later. Image

For me full suspension is just extra weight. I do not do heavy downhills like at a ski resort so I stick with front suspension. Luckily my local shop stocks everything for 26" bikes. And I have about 12 different sets at home I do not change tires frequently and I run them until they wear out. Of course these days I do not ride everyday like before.

Good luck. there are a lot of options. Finding out what works for you can be tough.

The great thing about mtb’s these days is that there is definitely one out there to suit everyone’s riding style and geography. And what works well for one guy and their spot isn’t the best option for someone else. My brother rode his first full squish yesterday and decided it wasn’t for him right now whereas I am loving mine. Probably gonna pick up a gravel bike soon to add to the mix.

Test riding a new bike with a poorly set up suspension is like going on a date with a hot chick but blowing the load in your pants at dinner thinking about possibilities. It the suspension isn’t set up right, any bike will suck. Take your shock pump and make adjustments during the ride and ride the same trail 2-3 times to get a good feel for it.

Adjustments for proper fit are important no matter what you ride, otherwise someone could get hurt!

Just found this comparison graphic on the Jamis website. 26+ might be do-able.Image

I don’t think there is a 26+. They are comparing the two sizes in the overlay. They should have used a different symbol.

Maybe Jamis created this? They describe 26+ in the above ads. 26x3 is the measurement.

26+ does exist. It just never caught on like 27.5+
