Test Drove A Telluride

Post by mattcantwin » Mon Mar 25, 2019 5:11 pm

After watching endless videos and reading many reviews, I decided to finally check one out in person.

There is a Kia dealership close to my house and according to their on-line inventory, there should have been three in stock.

Unfortunately, there was only one on the lot, in the LX trim level.

It wasn't in the showroom and I got to take it for a test drive.

Not an exhaustive drive, but I got a feel for the ride and size and some of the "bells and whistles".

Left the dealership with a very positive impression of the Telluride.

If I was to buy one, it would be the EX, as I want the second row bench and higher trim levels only offer bucket seats.

I also got a copy of a sticker for an EX vehicle...

that's a lot of money when you see it in print.

Dealerships make things difficult.

I wanted to get the price of an extended warranty and was told it is done after papers are signed with the "finance guy".

I persisted and was allowed to meet with him.

Kia offers a bumper-to-bumper 10 yr or 150,000 mile warranty for $2900-ish.

With all the electronic systems at play, I would add that into the mix.

Cars are expensive. I guess that’s why I drive a shit box and have a bunch of Rolex.

Assuming they use the ZF 8-speed auto, it's an excellent transmission.

That is an awful color, but the overall dimensions look pretty good. I wonder how these will do in the snow.

Extended warranties are not worth it imo, especially if it's a 10 year 150K bumper to bumper. The finance guy tried like hell to push that on me when I bought my Yukon. Glad I didn't as never needed it.

Curious about this one. I’ve always been “not a Kia/Hyundai guy” but between the Genesis and the higher and higher end looking vehicles they’ve been making, this one has my attention.

Lol. I am not happy unless my watch costs more than the car I’m driving!

In pretty sure it goes back and forth on the trim levels for the captains seats or bench. Base is bench, next level up is Captain, from that is bench and then the top of the line is Captain again. At least that’s what I remember from watching Alex on Autos video.

Why don’t you want the captain’s chairs? It makes getting to the third row incredibly easy.

For the most part, the rear seats will not be used and folded down.

Given that, I just prefer the bench (maybe it’s an old man thing).

Starting to look for a new vehicle as my daughter will be taking over my Trooper in the near future.
Your Genesis is part of the reason I am throwing an awd Genesis in the mix of ones I'm checking out.

It is a dope ride. Ours is the 5.0 R-Spec rear wheel drive. I love it.

WOW hold on, your daughter is driving already? And NO not the Trooper. Joking that is a reliable car for sure.

Yep, got driver's permit in January.
She loves the 98Trooper. Nice lift, can see all the cars around her, not fast.
Haven't seen the telluride but it looks sharp.
Also looking at jeep Wrangler Unlimited and vw atlas, in the suv category,.
Also looked at the 6cyl awd genesis, and just for fun, the alfa romeo guila awd..

I remember choosing a red convertible camaro rental over that color purple firebird convertible when we first moved to Los Angeles 18 years ago. The purple isn’t ideal. :puke:

If you get a Kia or Hyundai with a 10/100 warranty, don’t waste your money on an extended warranty.

If you buy something else like the Subaru, do some internet research. Many brands/dealers sell the warranty at a deep discount online. Some states prohibit this (the most regulated ones, but I’ll steer clear of political comments).

Be sure it’s a factory extended warranty and not a third party one.

Typically 50-60% the cost of what the selling dealer wants when you buy it at time of purchase.

It looks like a nice vehicle and Kia is making good cars. ^^^^^^ That is great advice on the extended warranty.
I only drove nice new vehicles from 1985-1996. Today, I only want to drive a piece of shit.

Everything I've read about extended warranties is that they're a high profit item for the seller and a bad deal for most buyers.
No, it's not Tourettes.

Everytime I entertain the thought of upgrading from my '98 Maxima, I pause to consider:

-No covered parking at my condo.
-Retired, no commuting.
-It may not look fab, but everything works.
-Insurance and taxes are next to nothing.
-Blue book value is next to nothing.
-It's incredibly safe. It won't be carjacked or broken into and other drivers will get the fuck outta my way.

Sounds almost like like me and my Suburban (everything doesn't work, though).
