If it wasn't for the makeup and theatrics would KISS......

Post by hobbit712 » Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:32 pm

....have had had the success they have today? Sirius XM started a new channel today. The KISS army radio is now playing. I was listening this afternoon and thought....bleh. All the same sound for the most part. Three chord rock n roll per se. A few songs were pretty good. Detroit Rock City and Beth come to mind.

Now as a 7th-8th grader back in the mid seventies they were God's as far as my juvenile mind was concerned. I loved the early songs and the makeup. I even had platform boots as a lot of others kids did also.

But then I found "real" rock n roll I thought and left KISS behind. Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd became my favorites and still are to this day. I listen to all genres of music now with 16 and 9 year old daughters in the house. Post Malone and Khalid ain't all bad at times.

So.....am i way off base here? I just wonder if KISS didn't have the makeup and show if the would have gone as far.

Ok......done with old man ramblings.

Kiss is great IMO. They are the reason most kids that were my age ever got into rock and roll. They wee larger than life, a living comic book to music.

Are they top tier musicians? Nope. Did they influence generations, yup. Seeing them in a month. Lol.

Their music sucks and they’re all incredibly ugly. It’s amazing they managed to get this successful even with the makeup and other stuff.

It's the entire spectacle, not just the music. Otherwise they would be playing at an Applebee's bar near you.

First concert I ever went to was Led Zeppelin in 1977, so basically anything after that never lived up to it.

I did attend a Kiss concert later on, but the biggest memory I have of that was AC/DC was the warm up band if that tells you anything. Came in late to them as we were in the parking lot "getting in the mood". Quickly realized our mistake, and AC/DC became my 2nd favorite band.

As if genuine Kiss wasn't bad enough, I had a girlfriend years ago whose brother was in a Kiss tribute band.

It was kid friendly, as they’ve always been. No foul language, lots of energy, and what seemed like sincere appreciation for the fans. I’m glad I was able to attend.

I'll give them respect, because they must be doing something right. A friend and I, went to see all these bands from the 80's (real friend-not one of my imaginary ones) . He still loves all that stuff. Every month offers a flight and hotel to go see one of these types of bands. I politely tell him that I love him, but to go fuck himself. He gets upset and reminds me that we used to love this stuff. I remind him that I turned 92 years old.

I've seen them a dozen times. Kids all the way to grandparents there. Mass appeal. KISS is more than music. Its the whole package.

Always liked Kiss- back in the day when I was pissed at my parents I would crank Shout it out loud...Anyway, they've sold 100 million albums worldwide.. so I find the original line up entertaining...great musicians, nope..

I would agree that they are the reason I started enjoying rock n roll...no doubt.

I even bought their comic book back in the day. The first edition that supposedly had drops of their real blood in the ink. :headbang:

kiss is party rock. it's not technically brilliant, it's basically sing along party rock and sing along rock ballads.

I love how this thread started at kiss and ended with jp openly telling us his preferences in men (for gay sex)
