My new to me ///M

Post by goaliechris » Tue Dec 11, 2018 8:45 am

A few weeks ago I did something slightly impulsive. I traded in my ‘18 M3 for a ‘16 X5M. I went in originally to change out my summer tires for the winter wheels and saw it sitting on the showroom floor. I had been thinking of eventually trading in the M3 as it’s pretty much a toy - a very fun but squirrelly toy. My wife wouldn’t drive it and my kids got car sick in it. So no one but me liked it and it was starting to lose its appeal.

So, I took the X5M for a drive and loved it. An absolute beast. If you know anything about it, it’s actually quicker than a M3/4 but drives so solidly. You can drive it easy like a SUV or you can thrash it. Of course, a twin turbo v8 that weighs 5300 lbs tends to use a bit of fuel. Like a lot. The only drawback vs the M3. It’s nicer on the inside, the ride is amazing, and it’s got gobs of horses and torques. Not a single regret (except the depreciation and fuel economy). Wife and kids love it as well.

Anyway, this one should stick around for a long time. ImageImageImage

Nice ride!

Your kids got carsick in the M3? I've always regretted not buying an M3 I looked at years ago. Thank you for that carsick comment. I'll move on and regret not picking up a 928.

Yes, 567 hp and 553 ft-lbs of torque.

The M3 was fun but it just shouldn’t have been what I had chosen for this stage of my life with kids and sports, two big dogs, etc. Maybe some other time but even then I think a used M5 would be more appealing to me.

You have a 928? That’s a fun car. Nice ride.

Congrats! My brother has a competition package F80 so I'm somewhat familiar with it, I just cant fathom a 5300lb SUV being faster than that :o I'm sure the cold start-up is nice to hear everyday.

Eh, I think it depends on the kids and how you drive. My kids have been riding around in my M3 for 7 years without a problem. But it's not like I throw it around corners on the way to school either.

beautiful, enjoy it!
i just picked up an '11 x5m about this time last year as a winter daily.
similar situation, was dropping off my wife's truck for an oil change and they had just taken it in on trade.
dealer is related to my wife and a dear friend, and when he saw me looking at it he came out and tossed me the keys and said take it for a ride, oil change'll take 45 minutes or so. drove it around for about 30 minutes and called him to have paperwork ready when i got back.
it really is a jeckyll/hyde proposition. tool around town quiet and easy, and it practically drives itself. but throw it in sport mode and wind it up and it's a hoot to flick and toss.
like you said, the power is great, but the weight, while making for a very solid, safe feel, chugs the fuel and eats front pads like the cookie monster on some chocolate chips.
totally worth it though

I like everything about this thread.

Congrats guys.

BMW does red leather very well. I had it in my 3 and loved the seats more than the car. :-)

That is a beauty, good luck with it. My wife drives an X3 for several years and loves it.

One of my coworkers has the same car in white with a beautiful brown interior. It’s awesome. Same year as yours, I believe.

Nice 2011! And thanks for the warning on the brake pads.

Thanks, all. It’s been fun so far. However, the watch budget was definitely impacted because of it.
