Car Alarms?

Post by r.palace » Sun Dec 02, 2018 8:57 am

I’ve been slowly upgrading my new to me F-150 and I thought I’d ask on here...been leasing for the past 10+ years (no reason to add an aftermarket alarm) and last time I purchased a car outright I was in high school and I had a basic Prestige system installed (still works fine; the car is still in the family).

This was all pre remote start, of course, and it’s something I’d like to incorporate in the next system I purchase; my work issued vehicle has spoiled me. 2 way capability and remote start are the only requirements per se.

Ive looked at Viper, Clifford, Avital (all owned by DEI) and haven’t made a decision. I handled a Viper 5305 and an Avital 5305 system at a local shop and found the 2 way remotes to be too bulky.

I’ve also read about the alarm systems you can control on your phone but I’m really not looking to add another subscription service to my array of subscription services

Any opinion is appreciated

Do people still buy car alarms? Serious question. I thought those and radar detectors went the way of the Dodo bird.

What year is your F150? The reason I ask is that I used to install alarms and remote starts for a living more than 10 years ago and I have a 2017 F150 and with the way the factory alarm and remote start work it's not really an upgrade going to an aftermarket system. Ford does make an add-on module that works in conjunction with the factory system to allow you to operate it remotely with an app called Ford Pass. But I think it's only 2017+ models.

I've not ever found them to reduce break ins on cars I had.

Usually they make me want to take a hammer to whatever car in the neighbourhood has an alarm blaring with no-one coming to turn it off (and usually not because someone was trying to break in). :)

I would never drive without a radar detector. I doubt I'd still have a license if I did. But then, I guess I'm an "enthusiastic" driver.

Lol I had a few detectors years back and they seemed pointless due to false alarms , late alarms etc. I still got popped with the detector. Maybe they have got better.

I haven't had a detector since I was in high school. I guess I've lost the desire to speed on a regular basis. It seems like the more extreme performance the car is that I have the more civilized I am at any given time. I'll randomly do burnouts in fast cars and hard acceleration, but not regularly.

They’re really only useful if we are just sitting on the side of the road with the radar constantly transmitting.

Interesting - I had V1s for a long time, sold all of them around 2012. Too many false alarms, especially with more cars using radar and laser cruise systems. Plus, lots of police using lidar these days, it seems like, and once you’re hit, you’re already fucked.

Is there a better model out there, R? Admittedly, my knowledge is 8-10 years old.

I pretty certain your stock vehicle has a factory alarm. Maybe you can add to it?

In my part of NC, most of the action is on Ka band, with cops sitting in a hidden spot on the road, running the gun constantly. So it's easy work for a detector. Honestly, very little or no Lidar around here. If there was a lot of laser here, I'd probably invest in a jammer.

Biggest issue I had with my old Escort 8500ix was false alarms. I've grown to absolutely hate Hondas and Acuras  I bought a Uniden R3 early this year, and it's been fantastic. Very easy to tune it to filter out most falses, and its range is very good. I've been happy with it.

I used to use a radar / laser regularly till about the mid - late 2000's.

But really, on the motorcycles it's tricky and worse if you do get pulled over, chances of getting a warning if you have a detector go south in a hurry. More of a "time and place" guy now, made 2 mistakes recently though but got immediate reductions each time (on the motorbike). 2 tickets in a decade isn't that bad. Just have to go easy for a bit now.

Anyway, back to the alarm issue: Terry what you suggest is what I did in my car (many years ago) I added a shock sensor but made sure it was 'tuneable' so I could make sure to reduce the chance of a false alarm. Would definitely recommend going that way.

I regularly set off a guys' alarm in my underground when I start my Aprilia (it's measured at 85 db at the track, so well within legal noise limits, but is a v-twin and that seems to hit the right frequency) and he can't tune his alarm. Which is a royal pain in the ass... but neither of us can do much about it.

This is what I have done in the past also. That way if a leaf falls on my car the alarm wouldn't go off.

I drive a lot and wouldn’t be without one. First, like with all technology you have to stay current. Second, I haven’t had a speeding ticket ever when running my detector. Third, they provide lots of intelligence that you have to decipher and apply. Such as, that little burst of KA indicates a cop shooting someone and you’re receiving the scatter of the radio energy. You can then know there is a cop running radar around and adjust your speed accordingly. Rarely do I ever see a cop just sitting on the side of the road running their radar constantly. The majority of my alerts come from cops shooting other motorists near enough to me that I get an alert. If you buy the newest units they filter out the false alerts due to the new technology in vehicles.

That is what the cops apparently do here, so my Valentine 1 has helped me a lot in my daily 76 miles commute.

I’m not going to argue cop stuff with anyone who is not a cop, but that’s pretty much what we all do. Unless it is a Motor cop who is going to take the time to pick his targets, we just leave it on and wait for someone stupid enough to hit the magic number (different for every cop).

The is also something to be said for not being completely stupid. If you get nabbed doing 100 mph in a 35, you deserve to get what's coming up you.

Just use the Waze app when driving and you get alerts on police locations.

Use it too. I’ve found it to be incredibly unreliable as far as the location of police go.

Also use both... if I had to choose one for police detection I would go with the radar.
