Agreed.

Certainly, you don't know when you might come under scrutiny from others. Having control over the information about you that is in the public domain or accessible to others is basic online self-defense.

Signal, RedPhone, Protonmail are all good privacy minded apps. WhatsApp was too but things have changed with Facebook buying it.
I'm sure you have similar regional issues in Australia with content as I do in Canada.

For instance, I like checking out NPR's First Listen for new music, but some albums I can't preview because I'm not in the US. This is exactly one of those areas where having VPN capabilities is really helpful. And, hurts no one, since all I do with it is figure out what new albums to look for on Spotify a few weeks later :)

"This content is not available in your region" is annoying!

If I was in the UK I'd probably want to VPN out all the time, their new regulations about data retention by ISPs are scary from a "surveillance state" perspective.
Funny you mention this. The people who run the platform my store is on alerts he when some one buy something while using a vpn. The platform is based out of Canada, most of my out of country buyers use a VPN. And I understand why they alert me, so that I confirm the orders are legit. The only orders I have had that were not legit have been in the US, and I got charged back on them. :banghead:

That's interesting feedback Terry. I know that more and more 'detection' of VPN is going on, for various reasons (like netflix trying to stop people from VPNing into the US because the US has the largest online catalog of shows). Do you really think that most out of country buyers use VPN or just that the alert is a bit too sensitive? Just curious.

I sometimes get a 2-factor authentication request when using a VPN to purchase something on sites where I've signed up before, because they don't recognize the address. But when I'm traveling I'd rather have that than to trust some hotel free-WIFI :)

The ip location doesn't match the address for the buyer so that is why they flag it.

Years ago (2006) I used hotel wifi in California (while traveling) without a vpn and paid dearly for it. My wife called me O' dark thirty wondering where the hell did all of our money in our account go. :angryfire:
